Berenguela is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
location
Berenguela is the central place of the canton Berenguela in the district ( Bolivian Municipio ) Santiago de Machaca in the province of José Manuel Pando . The village is located at an altitude of 4154 m in the headwaters of the Río Berenguela , which flows over the Río Mauri to the Río Desaguadero and is thus connected to Lake Titicaca .

Berenguela has a semi-arid climate, as there is insufficient rainfall for more than six months of the year for the plants to grow. Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Santiago de Machaca 89.5 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
