history

Fortified church in mountains

Berge was first mentioned in writing in the 12th century. In the late Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Lords of Plesse and the Dukes of Braunschweig . In the 15th century, the lords of Berge and the von Bischoffshausen family, named after the town, made the town a fief. Up until the 19th century, the Lords of Bischoffshausen were decisive for village life. Some family members are buried in the fortified church .

The place belonged to the Hessian office Ludwigstein / Witzenhausen until 1821 and then to the district of Witzenhausen . During the French occupation, the place belonged to the canton Friedland in the Kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813).

On February 1, 1971, the municipality of Berge was merged with four other places to form the new municipality of Neu-Eichenberg as part of the regional reform in Hesse .

Gut Neuenrode, located northwest of the village, has been known since the 10th century.
