Bernard Mels

Bernard Mels CICM (born November 28, 1908 in Lokeren , Belgium , † November 1, 1992 ) was a Belgian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Luiza .

Life

Bernard Mel joined the religious order of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at and received on 15 August 1933, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

On March 10, 1949, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular bishop of Belali and Apostolic Vicar of Luluabourg . The Bishop of Ghent , Karel-Justinus Calewaert , donated him episcopal ordination on May 17th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Vicar Emeritus of Niangara , Robert Constant Lagae OP , and Bishop Emeritus of Jinzhou , Louis Janssens CICM.

Bernard Mels became the first Archbishop of Luluabourg on November 10, 1959 as a result of the elevation of the Vicariate Apostolic Luluabourg to the Archbishopric . Pope Paul VI appointed him on September 26, 1967 the first Bishop of Luiza and bestowed on him the personal title of Archbishop. On October 3, 1970, Paul VI. the resignation put forward by Mels and appointed him titular Archbishop of Pulcheriopolis . On May 17, 1986, he renounced the titular bishopric of Pulcheriopolis.

Mels participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .
