Bernhard Schölkopf

Bernhard Schölkopf (born February 20, 1968 in Stuttgart ) is a German computer scientist .

Life and professional history

Schölkopf studied physics, mathematics and philosophy at the University of Tübingen and the University of London with a master's degree in mathematics in London in 1992 and a physics diploma at the University of Tübingen in 1994. He studied computer science at the TU Berlin in 1997 with Stefan Jähnichen and Vladimir Vapnik (ATT Bell Labs) is doing his PhD (Dissertation: Support Vector Learning). As a post-doctoral student he was at GMD and in 1999/2000 at Microsoft Research in Cambridge. In 2000/2001 he was group leader at the newly founded biotech company Biowulf and from 2001 director at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, where he was managing director from 2006 to 2009. From 2011 he is director at the newly founded Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen and managing director. There he heads the Empirical Inference Department.

He is honorary professor at the TU Berlin and the University of Tübingen.

Schölkopf deals with machine learning and especially kernel methods, which he also applies in algorithmic biology.

He has been a scientific member of the Max Planck Society since 2001 . On March 23, 2016, Bernhard Schölkopf was elected a member ( matriculation number 7680 ) of the Leopoldina . Schölkopf has been a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) since 2017 .

Since 2016, Schölkopf has initiated the so-called Cyber ​​Valley in Tübingen: a network of the universities of Tübingen and Stuttgart with companies such as Daimler , BMW , Porsche , Amazon and others. The AI ​​researcher Bernhard Schölkopf is working with universities and companies to promote and conduct cutting-edge research that is close to the application in order to keep young scientists in Europe.

Awards

In 2006 he received the JK Aggarwal Prize of the International Association for Pattern Recognition , in 2011 the Max Planck Research Prize , in 2012 the Academy Prize of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and in 2014 the Royal Society Milner Award . For 2018, Schölkopf was awarded the most important German science prize, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize , and the State Research Prize Baden-Württemberg , and for 2019 the Hector Science Prize . In 2019 he also received the Körber European Science Prize . Also for 2019 he was awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the field of computer science.
