Bernhard von Wiecki

Bernhard von Wiecki (born February 29, 1884 in Schatarpi ( Szatarpy ) near Neukrug (Polish: Nowa Karczma ); † January 11, 1940 in the Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig ; also: Bernard Wiecki ) was a priest and martyr of the Catholic Church .

Life

Wiecki was born in Kashubia , he comes from a Polish noble family from Mazovia , who had lived in Polish Prussia since 1696 . In 1910 he finished the seminary in Pelplin .

From 1911 to 1914 he was vicar in Gdansk, then came to the parish of Schöneck ( Skarszewy ). In 1918 he was back in Gdansk at the parish church of the Royal Chapel. In 1927 he became pastor of Wotzlaff ( Wocławy ) at Groß Zünder ( Cedry Wielkie ) in the Free State of Danzig . There he was very popular with the German as well as the Polish population.

Early in the morning on the first day of World War I , September 1, 1939, he was arrested by SS men with pastors Bronisław Komorowski and Franciszek Rogaczewski , as well as clergymen Władysław Szymanski and Marian Górecki and imprisoned in the Victoria School and later in the Gestapo building in Gdansk -Neugarten transferred. Bishop Splett took great care of his priests and was even able to visit them briefly. A few weeks later he was deported to the Stutthof concentration camp.

On January 11, 1940 Wiecki was there with the religious teachers Wladyslaw Szymanski and other members of the Polish intelligentsia shot . The corpses were exhumed after 1945 and buried in the honor cemetery in Zaspa ( Gdańsk-Zaspa ).

Commemoration

A plaque on the Marienkapelle in Söder near Hildesheim gives his name. Another memorial stone is located in Schwerzen , which was donated privately. The Catholic Church included Bernhard von Wiecki as a witness of faith in the German martyrology of the 20th century . Nothing is known about a process of beatification as a martyr.

Trivia

It is said of him that he was very affable. Since it was not appropriate for priests to stay in the inn after midnight, the landlady of the Wotzlaff village jug stopped the clock shortly before midnight if necessary.
