history

Remains from the Roman era have been discovered in Berrendorf-Wüllenrath.

The place name Berrendorf probably originated in the Franconian period , like many place names that end with the addition "-dorf". It was named after a Franconian named Bero. From the 12th to the 14th century Berrendorf was known as Beredorf, Berindorp, Berendorpe or Beyrendorp, among others.

Berrendorf was first mentioned in 1108. A document names the Abbey of St. Truiden in Belgium as the landlady of "Berendorp" . Traces of church life can be found in the year 1378: The " liber valoris ", a tax register created around 1300, mentions a chapel in Berrendorf, which was under the parish priest of Paffendorf as a subsidiary church. The catchment area of the Berrendorfer Chapel included the villages of “Groiffen, Kutz, Willenraid and Etzweiler” (Grouven, the Kutzde, Wüllenrath and Etzweiler farms, which disappeared centuries ago). In 1570 Berrendorf finally became an independent parish.

The Apostle Matthias has been venerated in Berrendorf for centuries . According to tradition, the plague raged in the town in 1442. Three Berrendorfer are said to have joined pilgrims who were on the way to the tomb of the apostle in Trier. The plague ended with the pilgrimage, and from this point onwards Berrendorfer set out on foot every year to Trier: The Matthias Brotherhood was born. Only a few years later, in 1464, the Sebastianus Brotherhood was founded. There has also been a Kevelaer brotherhood in the village since 1836 , and an Odilia brotherhood existed until the 1980s.

Bürgewald

Berrendorf and Wüllenrath belong to the so-called "Bürgewaldgemeinden" which owned the rights to the Bürgewald . According to the legend, this is due to the holy Arnold von Arnoldsweiler , for the legendary "Ride around the Bürgewald". The main town of the Bürgewald communities is Arnoldsweiler . There the two villages had to offer a candle to Saint Arnold on Whit Tuesday, later on Whit Monday. This wax interest was only canceled in the 19th century.
