history

General

A chapel was first mentioned in a document in Berrendorf in 1274. In the second half of the 16th century it became a parish collected and the chapel into a parish church. Before that Berrendorf was a branch of the parish Paffendorf . In the Liber valoris from around 1300, a chapel was also performed for Berrendorf. In addition to the branches Giesendorf and Grouven with the Brigidakapelle, Etzweiler with the branch church St. Hubertus was part of the parish until after 1899 , until the place was elevated to an independent parish.

Church building

The first church in Berrendorf was probably a Romanesque hall church . In 1467 the bell tower , which is still preserved today , was raised. The basement was built around 1300. In 1524 the nave, about which nothing else is known, was demolished. A late Gothic new building was erected at the same location between 1524 and 1578 while retaining the tower. Between 1891 and 1895, with the exception of the choir , the church was completely renovated and secured. Around 1900 the church became too small for the increased population of Berrendorf and an extension was planned. Around 1903 the choir and sacristy were laid down and a neo-Gothic transept with a new choir was built at the same location . A sacristy was added to the left and right of the choir. This renovation gave the parish church its current appearance.

The church was completely restored between 2007 and 2011, as the rib vaults in particular were severely damaged. On April 17, 2011, the church was reopened in a service.

architecture

St. Michael is a three-aisled hall church with a transept and stands on a walled cemetery. It closes in the east with a polygonal choir , the west tower made of brick under a steep slate pyramid from the 15th century was added. The three western bays made of brick with tuff bands come from a nave built between 1524 and 1578 . The hipped roofs over the side aisle yokes are set across. The walls are structured by three-lane tracery windows.

Furnishing

Until the renovation in 1903, St. Michael had a baroque high altar with a figure of St. Archangel Michael , a baroque confessional and a baptismal font from around 1300. However, these pieces of equipment were removed and destroyed in the course of the church's expansion. Only the figure of Michael and a figure of Matthias, also baroque, have been preserved from the historical furnishings. Today's church furnishings are largely from the 1900s and 1910s. Of these, the richly carved neo-Gothic high altar and two associated side altars in the transept, as well as the wooden pulpit , which is decorated with neo-Gothic ornaments, should be mentioned. The popular altar and the ambo are carved in stone and were created in the second half of the 20th century.
