Berthold Seitz

Berthold Seitz (born June 25, 1962 in Schwarzenbach near Weiden id OPf. ) Is a German ophthalmologist , university professor and director of the clinic for ophthalmology and university outpatient clinic at the Saarland University Clinic (UKS). He is known for his scientific contributions in the fields of corneal transplantation (in particular methods to minimize postoperative astigmatism ), cataract surgery and artificial lens calculation after refractive corneal surgery as well as techniques of amniotic membrane transplantation and their histological integration patterns into the cornea.

Life

Seitz studied human medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1981 to 1988. In 1987 he received a “scholarship for particularly gifted people” in accordance with the Bavarian Law on the Promotion of Talented Students. In 1988 he received his license to practice medicine. In 1993 he received the specialist certification for ophthalmology in Munich. In 1996 he passed the European Board of Ophthalmology exam in Paris ( FEBO ). Seitz was awarded a doctorate in 1989 with “magna cum laude”. med. PhD at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (topic: early and late results in 222 surgical reconstructions of an internal carotid artery with a contralateral internal occlusion, taking into account the preoperative symptoms).

Seitz began his clinical and scientific career in 1989 as a medical officer in the German Armed Forces in Amberg, then as a research assistant / assistant doctor at the eye clinic and polyclinic of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and employee at the ophthalmopathological laboratory there. In 1995 he received a DFG scholarship and was a research fellow in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California School of Medicine, Los Angeles. In 1996 he became senior physician at the eye clinic with polyclinic of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and head of the general polyclinic there. Since 1993, Seitz has established and directed the corneal consultation and since 1996 the consultation for refractive surgery in Erlangen. Since 2000 he has headed the Cornea Bank Erlangen and also became the main surgeon for keratoplasty . In 1997 Seitz became an elected member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Transplantation Society (DTG) for the cornea area. Seitz completed his habilitation in 1999 for ophthalmology in Erlangen (subject: curative non-mechanical surgery of the cornea). In 2002 Seitz co-founded the Cornea Section in the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) and is its spokesperson without interruption to this day. In 2002 he was appointed to a C3 professorship and associate professor for ophthalmology at the University of Erlangen. From 2003 to 2006, Seitz was the medical director of the project "Non-mechanical trephination using short-pulsed solid-state lasers in corneal transplants". In 2006 he was promoted to director of the clinic for ophthalmology at the Saarland University Hospital , where he also acted as state doctor for the blind and visually impaired in Saarland from 2007 to 2012. Under Seitz, a W3 professorship for experimental ophthalmology was established in Homburg / Saar. Seitz became a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2012. In 2013, Seitz was President of the DOG. In 2015 he was elected chairman of the DOG program committee.
