The Bertsdorfer Wasser , also called the Bertse , is a 5.2 km long stream in the southeast Saxon community of Bertsdorf-Hörnitz in the district of Görlitz , which flows into the lower Mandau from the right in Hörnitz , here border waters to the city of Zittau .
description
The brook rises northeast of the Pocheberg in the Zittau Mountains and flows through a valley lined with gentle hills in a northeastern direction. From its source in the Butte , the Bertsdorf water meanders in its upper course through the entire village of Bertsdorf , on both sides of the stream the houses of the elongated Waldhufendorf are lined up.
Below Bertsdorf the water flows in the open country past the allotment garden “Am Höllgraben”. The lower course leads through the Lehndörfel to Althörnitz. There the brook flows into the Mandau near the former Schweizerhof inn below the Mandau bridge between Hörnitz and Pethau .
The Bertsdorfer Wasser is a completely open flowing body of water. Within the localities of Bertsdorf and Hörnitz, it is mostly developed and set in high natural stone walls, especially on the section between the two villages its natural character has been preserved. The stream is crossed by numerous bridges and footbridges. In Hörnitz, the brook shapes the outskirts.
Tributaries are the field water or Steinbüschelgraben, the Mühlgraben (a branch of the Grundbach ), the Alte Graben or Schießhausgraben and the Hörnitzer Dorfbach.
The narrow catchment area of the Bertsdorfer Water has an extension of 11.5 km² and is delimited by numerous mountains and elevations. It covers the largest part of the municipal area of Bertsdorf-Hörnitz and minimal parts of Jonsdorf , Hainewalde and Olbersdorf . The area has a large mean slope and is largely used for agriculture because of its fertile loess soils. The proportion of arable and meadow areas is 82%; 12.4% of the area is sealed, the small forest areas take up 5.6% of the total area.
Centennial flood of August 7, 2010
In 2010 there was heavy rainfall in the Zittau Mountains from the end of July to the beginning of August. From August 6th to 7th at the Bertsdorf-Hörnitz precipitation station, a precipitation amount of 57 mm was measured within 24 hours, so that the storage capacity of the poorly forested soils was very much exhausted. On the morning of August 7th, heavy precipitation reached the Zittau Mountains, with between 10 and 36 mm falling every hour. A total of 101 mm of precipitation fell from August 7th to 8th. The 160 l / m² measured at the precipitation station within 48 hours correspond to the average precipitation amount of two months, the mean annual precipitation is just over 600 mm. The water levels in the Mandau catchment area exceeded the highest observed water levels at many levels within a few hours. The flood is believed to be an event that occurs less than a hundred years from now.
The short flowing stretches together with the steep terrain gradient led to a rapid formation of runoff in the catchment area and a runoff concentration in the Bertsdorf water. The tributaries also rose to raging waters; the Steinbüschelgraben, usually a waterless trickle, shot down Olbersdorfer Strasse as a raging river into the Bertsdorfer valley. The floods inundated houses, outbuildings and gardens in Bertsdorf, and the village street along the brook became part of the brook bed. Backwater caused by floating debris on bridges and footbridges aggravated the flood situation. Due to the lack of retention areas , the flood wave flattened only slightly towards the lower reaches. Residents on the lower reaches had to be evacuated. The Bertsdorf-Hörnitz volunteer fire brigade was only partially able to take effective flood defense measures due to the wildly flowing water and the floods.
The flood caused millions of euros in damage in Bertsdorf-Hörnitz. The wild running water from the adjacent agricultural areas led to soil erosion and mud flooding into the village. The stone bridge on Heinestrasse in Althörnitz was torn away. Banks and embankments as well as extensive washouts developed.
The only flood protection system on the slopes of the Koitsche above the Hörnitzer Dorfbach turned out to be of minor importance for the entire catchment area. The removal of bottlenecks as part of the restoration of the stream bed was seen as the most important measure.
