Professional mission

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A professional mission (older term: status mission ) is an association that has set itself the goal of talking to members of certain professional groups about questions of the Christian faith and offering practical help. The majority of the professional missions see themselves as non-denominational, but a not insignificant minority, which is mainly assigned to the Catholic area, work in close confessional ties.

history

In the medieval church, various professions and craft guilds gathered around a patron saint . From this, so-called brotherhoods developed with the aim of securing a special blessing through the intercession of the respective patron saint and promoting the spiritual life within the respective profession.

In the older pietism of the 17th century there are loose associations of devout craftspeople who can be seen as forerunners of the later evangelical professional missions. German journeyman craftsmen were responsible for free church missionary work in the middle of the 19th century and became founders of many Baptist and Methodist congregations on their travels .

Protestant vocational missions in the true sense of the word did not emerge until the last third of the 19th century as a result of the revival movement that had spread primarily in England , the Netherlands , Switzerland and Germany . The waiter mission is one of the oldest professional missions . It was created in 1872 in Cannes in the south of France , where the German parish office of the Evangelical Church had set up a waiter's home for "morally and mentally endangered hotel employees". In 1893, a missionary waiter in Frankfurt am Main created the first German waiter mission, the nucleus of the International Christian Waiter Association founded in 1906 with branches in Switzerland and England. Further professional missions in the initial phase were the inland navigation mission (founded in Berlin in 1877) and the baker mission (founded in 1889, also in Berlin). The roots of the German seaman's mission lie in the first seaman's home built by Johann Hinrich Wichern in Bremen in 1854 .

An important starting point for the formation of the Catholic professional missions was the effectiveness of priest Adolph Kolping (1813–1865) and the journeyman's associations that he initiated and that led to the establishment of the Kolping Society .

More recently, in addition to the professional world, the leisure time and the hobby of working people have come into the focus of the professional missions. A number of independent organizations emerged. Examples of this are athletes calling athletes , the Christian model railway team , Ichtues - Christians in golf , the bible bikers . as well as the evangelical-free church kite sports association Ewigkite.

Goals and working methods

The vocational missions initially focused on members of those professions who, due to their working hours, were only able to take advantage of the church's event offers irregularly or not at all. This included seafarers, employees in the hotel and restaurant trade, as well as bakers and showmen. Another goal of these popular missionary efforts were working people who, in the era of industrialization , streamed from the countryside and from the small towns to the big cities, where they became the proletariat . In addition to special offers that responded to the needs of this group, various professional missions also led to the founding of special diaconal associations that became the sponsors of dormitories and schools for adult education. Literature work also became an important branch of the professional missions' work.

Another aim of the career missions is to bring members of the same or similar occupational fields into contact with one another and to offer them a platform for exchanging ideas about job-specific problems. The regular local meetings and national meetings and conferences serve this purpose.

Many professional missions also see missionary discussions with colleagues, business partners and customers who are distant from their faith, as well as guidance and help, as one of their important tasks.
