Roberto Luís Gaspar de Deus Severo , known as Beto (born May 3, 1976 in Lisbon ), is a former Portuguese football player .

Career

Beto comes from the youth of CAC "Pontinha" until he moved to the Juniors of Sporting Lisbon at the age of 14 . He was active for the youth teams of Sporting for five years before joining the professional squad before Sporting. Before he played for the capital city for the first time, however, the Sporting officials decided to loan Beto. After he was able to collect match practice in the 1994/95 season at União Lamas and 1995/96 at SC Campomaiorense , he returned to his home club in the 1996/97 season. There he developed into a top performer and leader. As team captain, he won the national championship and the Portuguese Super Cup with the green-whites in 2000 and 2002 . With the cup success in 2002, his national title collection was complete.

After internal problems with the then coach Paulo Bento , Beto left Lisbon in January 2006 and signed with Girondins Bordeaux . On the last day of the summer transfer period of the same year, he was loaned to the Spanish first division promoted Recreativo Huelva . On July 3, 2007, he signed a 3-year contract with the Andalusians . After three years in Spain he returned to Lisbon and moved to Belenenses Lisbon . Beto ended his career at UD Alzira in 2011 .

National team

Beto was a defender of the Portuguese national team for a long time . As a teenager he was nominated for the junior national team. At the U-18 European Football Championship in Spain in 1994 , he was in the Portuguese squad. The team made it to the final and, after a 1-1 draw, beat their opponents from Germany 4-1 on penalties.

On September 6, 1997 Beto played his first senior international match in the national team (1-1 against Germany ). He took an active part in the European Football Championship 2000 (two missions) and the Football World Cup 2002 (three missions) and was on the squad for the 2004 European Football Championship in his own country. He played 31 times for the Portuguese national soccer team and scored 2 goals.
