Beyond the Limits (alternative title: The Burning Moon 2) is a German thriller , horror and splatter film by Olaf Ittenbach from 2002. The film is designed as an episode film , with the two episodes connected by a framework plot.

The plot of the film revolves around the so-called "Eternal Heart", the heart of Satan's son , which gives the owner eternal life when he inserts it into the body of a "pure soul".

action

The young journalist Vivian is commissioned to interview the cemetery keeper of the oldest and most famous cemetery Frederick because of his ten-year professional anniversary. When asked about special people buried in the cemetery, he tells the story of Robert Downing, who was tragically killed.

  • After Clarice, the friend of Paul Pattuchi, was murdered, he allegedly commits suicide. Before that, however, he asks his friend and hit man Mortimer and his companion Rick to avenge the murder of his girlfriend. The following evening, the head of a mafia gang Jimmie Levinson and his wife Marianne are preparing Marianne's birthday party when Robert Downing appears and, on behalf of the boss, questions Levinson about a missing amount of cocaine. Levinson says that Pattuchi was the one who made the cocaine go, which Downing doesn't believe. When the Mafiosi Christopher, Howard and Brad invited to the party appear with their friends Courtney, Laura and Denise, the situation escalates: the Mafiosi beat Downing and tie him to a chair. Then Levinson calls Mortimer so that he and Rick take care of the removal of Downing. When the two hit men appear after a while, Mortimer shoots the assembled Mafiosi. After he and Rick tied up all the party guests, he justified this with the fact that the boss knew that the gang was behind the disappearance of the drugs. The Mafiosi refuse to admit this, whereupon the hit men murder Denise and Howard. Levinson then admits to cheating on everyone and reveals the drug stash. After Rick fetches the suitcase, Mortimer tests the cocaine and then kills Rick while he is also using cocaine. Mortimer then finds a relic in a suitcase Downing brought with him: a shining, beating heart. After this find he kills all of the remaining party guests except Courtney. When he then wants to murder Downing, he realizes that he was able to free himself and fled through a window. Distracted by this escape, he does not notice that Courtney was able to free himself. She stabs him and curses the lifeless body. Suddenly Pattuchi, believed dead, appears behind her and shoots her. He takes the suitcase with the drugs and the relic and wants to flee. When he tries to get into his car, Downing shoots him.

Shaken by the story and Frederick's amusement, Vivian asks what the relic is all about. Frederick then tells her a story of the relic, which he calls the Eternal Heart , from the Middle Ages.

  • Inquisitor David Deming rides with his knights to a congregation of apostates in order to convert the apostates and to arrest their spiritual leader, James Flynn, who is allegedly guilty of heresy . Sergeant Dennis clashes with Deming over the necessity of superior numbers of soldiers, but has to submit to the Inquisitor. As the congregation continues to pray after Deming's request to repent, he has them slaughtered by his men under the leadership of Tom Brewster and takes Flynn prisoner. During the torture, the real background to the arrest emerges: Deming wants to learn from Flynn the secret of how one can achieve eternal life with the help of the Eternal Heart . Since Flynn does not want to divulge his knowledge even under brutal torture, he is ultimately burned at the stake as a heretic. As a result Deming tries to decipher old writings in order to solve the mystery himself. He finds out that he has to sacrifice a person with a pure soul and then use the Eternal Heart to him. He chooses Annabella, Dennis's friend, to implement this plan. She is kidnapped by Brewster after being brutally raped and taken to the Inquisitor's dungeon. When Dennis finds out, he kills Brewster and rushes to the dungeon. However, he comes too late because Deming has already stabbed Annabella. When Dennis makes it clear that he will not kill Deming, but rather bring him to court, he throws himself into Dennis' sword. Thereupon Dennis drowns himself sadly in a stream. After a while, Deming supposedly wakes up and is greeted by Flynn. He tells him that after Annabella's murder he has reached his goal. Then Flynn banishes him to hell, where he is brutally tortured by demons and his soul is destroyed.

While Frederick Vivian is drowning in a holy water font, he reveals himself to be the boss . He killed Robert Downing when he wanted to flee with the Eternal Heart found on Frederick's order . Then he starts to implant Vivian's heart.

criticism

"Horror in an extremely sadistic staging that leaves no room for ironic refractions."

Awards

The film won the Golden Glibb Award at the 2003 Weekend of Fear in Nuremberg .

production

In order to finance the film, producer Yazid Benfeghoul set up a donation account. Each donor received a DVD of the film signed by Olaf Ittenbach and specially created for the donors. The donors were also invited to the premiere of the film and the after party.

The frame story and the mafia episode were shot in Los Angeles because the producers felt that a film on a low budget needed a shooting environment that disguised the financial constraints with its high-quality visuals. For the authentic medieval flair , the second episode was filmed in Burghausen .

German versions

In addition to the uncut version of Beyond the Limits with a running time of 107 minutes, which has not been checked and is only sold in Austria , a version cut by around six minutes was published in Germany. This version was given by the umbrella organization of the film industry the seal criminally harmless after the Voluntary Self-Regulation of the Film Industry refused a release.
