Bijapur is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The area is 8530 km². The administrative seat is the city of Bijapur .

history

Bijapur District was created in 2007 when it was created from parts of Dantewada District . The district was part of Madhya Pradesh until 2000 when the new state of Chhattisgarh was established. The district is part of the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ".

population

The population was 255,230 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 8.78%. Bijapur has a gender ratio of 984 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 40.86% in 2011 (men: 50.46%, women: 31.11%). This makes literacy one of the lowest in all of India. Almost 96.1% of the population are Hindus , approx. 1.1% are Christians , approx. 0.7% are Buddhists , approx. 0.6% are Muslims and approx. 1.5% did not indicate any religious affiliation or practiced any other Religions. 16.7% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Almost 11.6% of the population live in cities.
