Billings is the largest city in the US state of Montana . It is located in Yellowstone County and is the seat of the county administration ( County Seat ). The population of around 110,000 (as of 2016) is spread over an area of ​​87.6 km 2 . Around 158,900 people live in the entire metropolitan area. This makes Billings not only the largest city in Montana, but also its only city and agglomeration with a population of over 100,000.

The city lies on the upper Yellowstone River .

history

The town was founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railway for its workers and named after the company's then president, Frederick Billings. Just three years later, Billings received city rights.

economy

The city's economy is shaped by three oil refineries. Billings is also an important trading and processing center, especially for cattle, wheat and sugar beet. Billings has two large clinics and various other medical facilities. There is one airport, Billings Logan International Airport .

Billings is also one of the most important cities in Montana when it comes to education.
