Billings is the largest city in the US state of Montana . It is located in Yellowstone County and is the seat of the county administration ( County Seat ). The population of around 110,000 (as of 2016) is spread over an area of 87.6 km 2 . Around 158,900 people live in the entire metropolitan area. This makes Billings not only the largest city in Montana, but also its only city and agglomeration with a population of over 100,000.
The city lies on the upper Yellowstone River .
history
The town was founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railway for its workers and named after the company's then president, Frederick Billings. Just three years later, Billings received city rights.
economy
The city's economy is shaped by three oil refineries. Billings is also an important trading and processing center, especially for cattle, wheat and sugar beet. Billings has two large clinics and various other medical facilities. There is one airport, Billings Logan International Airport .
education
Billings is also one of the most important cities in Montana when it comes to education. Important institutions of higher education are the Montana State University Billings (formerly Eastern Montana College , founded in 1927), the Montana State University - College of Technology and the Rocky Mountain College (founded in 1878).
Attractions
For some tourists, the city is a starting point for Yellowstone National Park , the Crow Indian Reservation and the National Cemetery and Memorial to the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. In Billings itself you can visit the Yellowstone Art Museum . 6 km southeast of Billings is Pictograph Cave State Park , a more than 4,500 year old cave system with fossils and ancient rock art .

Billings was part of the setting in the US television series The Denver Clan . In the scenario, it was the home or home of the main character Adam Carrington , the prodigal son of the Carrington clan.
