Up to the Horizon and Beyond made its cinema debut on January 28, 1999. The film is based on Oliver Bukowski's radio play “Bahlke's Last Love”. The title song is Udo Lindenberg's "Horizont". The Polyphonic film and television company and the MDR television are responsible for production.

When the small crook Katja Pfeifer was sentenced to three years without parole by the judge Beate Nelken, the former excavator operator Henning Stahnke kidnapped the judge in his rickety Mercedes in order to free his great love. He telephoned an ultimatum to Katja's defense attorney, who called in the police. Stahnke takes the judge to his mother's remote house and introduces her as his fiancée Katja. While Stahnke's mother and Beate Nelken befriend each other and Stahnke and the kidnapped woman are getting closer and closer, Katja has broken out of prison and appears with the three of them, as well as the police a short time later. Stahnke and Katja flee to the nearby lignite mining area. The judges are stopped by the surrounding police to come to the aid of the two when a works train approaches the couple ...
