The Roman Catholic Diocese of Crete ( Latin Dioecesis Candiensis ) is in Greece situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Heraklion .

It was established in 1213 as the Archdiocese of Candia , dissolved in 1669 and the territory attached to the Apostolic Vicariate of Constantinople , from which it was downgraded on August 28, 1874, but was re-established as the Diocese of Crete and became a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Naxos-Tinos .

By the Capuchins looked after and always without diocesan priests , the Bishop of Syros Milos and Santorini also apostolic administrator for the diocese. The last bishop of Crete, Lorenzo Giacomo Inglese, changed the diocese on May 5, 1935.

The cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The patron saint of the diocese is Francis of Assisi . There are churches in Chania , Heraklion and Salaminos ( Rethymno ).
