The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syros (Milos) ( latin Dioecesis Syrensis (et milensis) ) is in Greece situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Ano Syros, a community of Syros-Ermoupoli on the island of Syros .
The diocese was founded in the 13th century (1207) and included the islands of Syros and Gyaros .
In Ottoman times, the Turks only came to collect taxes, so that in 1744, by popular appeal, the bishop was given the administration of the island of Syros, a role he held until the founding of the Kingdom of Greece . Over the years, Greek Orthodox Christians came to the island, who had formed the western-oriented upper middle class since industrialization , while the Catholic population took over the part of the popular Greek rural population.
In 1900 the Diocese of Milos was united with Syros. Since 1947 the bishop in persona episcopi has also been bishop of Santorini .
The late medieval cathedral of St. George is located in Ano Syros ( Ermoupolis ) and was restored in the 19th century. Among other things, there is an icon of St. George , who is also the patron of the diocese.
Today the diocese extends over the Cycladic islands Syros , Milos , Kimolos , Kea , Kithnos , Sifnos and Serifos .
The bishop is also the administrator of the diocese of Crete .
