The powiat Chrzanowski [ ˈpɔvʲat xʃaˈnɔfsci ] is a powiat ( district ) in the northwestern part of the Polish Lesser Poland Voivodeship . The smallest, but sometimes densely populated powiat in Lesser Poland with around 130,000 inhabitants is surrounded by the powiat Olkusz , Krakow , Wadowice and Oświęcim .

history

Powiat Chrzanowski in 1938

In the 13th century Chrzanów was the seat of a castellany in the Duchy of Krakow , possibly temporarily in the Silesian Duchy of Opole , which more or less included today's Powiat and the city of Jaworzno . After the abolition of patrimonial the Chrzanów district was established in similar boundaries , and after 1920 in the Kraków Voivodeship . At that time, industrialization developed there , known as Zagłębie Krakowskie (= Cracow mining district ), but not as strong as in Upper Silesia. In the interwar period , the Powiat Chrzanowski of the Cracow Voivodeship had 116,668 inhabitants, who were predominantly Roman Catholic (102,445) Poles (112,350) and Israelite (10,652) Jews (4,011). In the time of the Sanacja there were controversial plans to annex the western part of the Powiat Chrzanowski with Jaworzno to the autonomous Silesian Voivodeship . During the Second World War , the district of Krenau in the new " East Upper Silesia " belonged to the administrative district of Katowice in the province of Silesia (since 1941 the province of Upper Silesia ). After the war, numerous places were incorporated into Jaworzno, which was elevated to an independent city in 1956. From 1975 to 1998 the municipalities of Babica, Chrzanów, Libiąż and Trzebinia belonged to the Katowice Voivodeship , while only the least industrialized Alwernia remained in the Kraków Voivodeship . From 1998 the district belongs to the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, while Jaworzno belongs to the Silesian Voivodeship .
