The Roman Catholic diocese of Torit ( Latin Dioecesis Toritensis ) comprises the districts of Kapoeta , Imatong and Magwi of the southern Sudanese state of Eastern Equatoria .
history
Origin and development
On May 2, 1983 the Diocese of Torit was founded and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Juba as a suffragan. During the civil war, the greater part of the diocesan area was controlled by the Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA). The seat of the diocese was temporarily relocated to Narus , 50 kilometers from the Kenyan border. Torit and other important places could not be administered and supplied from there. Parts of the diocesan administration were relocated to Nairobi. Through an agreement with the Bishop of Malakal , the Bishop of Torit takes care of the parishes in the area around Boma in the diocese of Malakal. Since the end of the civil war in 2005 and the LRA riots in 2008, the entire diocese area can again be administered from Torit.
Pastoral situation
Due to long vacancies, the long-standing illness and the early death of Bishop Akio Johnson Mutek, there was no active leadership of the diocese during the decisive years of the development. Former Bishop Paride Taban, who was able to raise a lot of humanitarian aid during the civil war of the diocese and the entire Sudanese Church through international contacts, is still committed to peace and reconciliation. With international help he set up the Kuron Peace Village , a place of learning for practical reconciliation in the east of the diocese. The diocese operates health centers for first aid (PHCC) in around 10 locations, as well as around 15 schools of various types.

Parishes
General information
Since there are only a few churches in the individual parishes and larger churches can only be built under difficult conditions, numerous smaller houses or camps are set up for prayer and worship instead. In addition to these prayer centers, there are also facilities for supply and logistics that are also located outside the diocesan area, for example in the diocese of Malakal or in the border area of Kenya .
