Akio Johnson Mutek

Akio Johnson Mutek (born January 2, 1958 in Lodwara Tala , Sudan , † March 18, 2013 in Nairobi , Kenya ) was Bishop of Torit .

Life

Akio Johnson Mutek grew up with his family in Uganda because of the civil war in Sudan. In 1982 he entered the seminary of Juba and studied philosophy. From 1984 to 1988 he studied Catholic theology in the seminary in Khartoum . He was ordained a priest on December 18, 1988 . He was active in pastoral care in Khartoum and Bahati in the diocese of Nakuru in Kenya (1989-90) and in Torit , the capital of the state of Eastern Equatoria in South Sudan . Because of the capture of Torit by government forces, he was forced to flee to Kampala , the capital of Uganda. From 1991 he completed studies in the USA and from 1992 to 1996 he studied social communication at the Maryknoll School of Theology in Maryknoll, New York. In 1996 he became Vicar General of the Diocese of Torit.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Suava and auxiliary bishop in Torit on May 18, 1999 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Sudan , Marco Dino Brogi, OFM , donated him episcopal ordination on August 15 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Paulino Lukudu Loro MCCJ , Archbishop of Juba , and Paride Taban , Bishop of Torit.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Torit on June 9, 2007.

Mutek died as a result of two kidney transplants .
