The Blšanka , also Zlatý potok (German Goldbach ) is a right tributary of the Eger in the Czech Republic . Characteristic of the river is a reddish brown color caused by floating debris.

geography

The Blšanka rises east of the Kopáčov military installations on the Hradiště military training area in the south of the Duppau Mountains . Its source is at the western foot of the Prokopy ( Prokop , 748 m) or southwest of the Pilíř ( Filirsch , 760 m) on a saddle, on which the Liboc has its origin 800 m northwest . The course of the Blšanka initially leads to the southeast and after two kilometers it leaves the military area at the Sklárna forester's house. Via Bělá, Hamerský Domek, Horní Mlýn, Kostrčany, Petrův Mlýn and Nahořečice, it reaches Lubenec , where it turns to the east and later to the northeast and the fertile Podbořansko basin, located between the Duppau Mountains, the Rakonice Hills and the Džbán Mountains, flows through the Podbořansko ( Goldbachland ) . Along the Blšanka follow the places Řepany, Příběnice, Mukoděly, Kryry , Hřebíčkovský Mlyn, Hradčany, Očihov , Beraní Dvůr, Blšany , Sirem, Carka, Liběšovice, Libořice , Železná, Měcholupy , Nový Mlýn, Bukovina, Holedeč , Holedeček, Stránky, Veletice , Dobříčany and Trnovany. After 49 kilometers the Blšanka flows into the Eger across from Zálužice . At its mouth it has an average water flow of 1.05 m³ / s.

From Kryry downstream there are light lines of fortification of the Czechoslovak Wall along the Blšanka . From Železná, the Praha – Chomutov railway follows the course of the river.

In the past, the Blšanka had several severe floods. On the night of May 25th to 26th, 1872, a night flash flood devastated the Goldbach valley after cloudbursts ; several people drowned and there was considerable damage. The water level has been measured in Holedeč since 1905. The highest water levels since recorded were in 1956 at 2.80 m and in 1920 at 2.32 m. In contrast, the river dried up in 1906, 1907, 1911, 1935, 1953, 1965 and 2007 in some cases over several months. In 1969 a limnigraphic station was set up in Holedeč and since 1995 the sedimentation in the water has also been observed there. The red-brown color of the water is caused by the high proportion of iron compounds in the weathered soils from the Permian period. In the rainy year of 1995, the Blšanka near Holedeč carried almost 7,000 t of alluvial material with it, while in the drought of 1998 it was only 293 t. The Blšanka has a width of 5 to 10 m at its lower course and is bordered by steeply sloping, clay-sandy embankments.
