action

The film paints the picture of a love, but does not show its stages in chronological order. Dean, a young high school dropout who works as a movership in New York City , happens to meet Cindy, a medical student who lives with her parents in Pennsylvania and looks after her grandmother. He falls in love with her and, after vigorous wooing, conquers her heart too. When Cindy finds out that she is unintentionally pregnant from her previous boyfriend Bobby, with whom she was only recently, she is unsure at first and wants to have the child aborted, but has the abortion canceled at the last moment. Dean can give her support in this situation. The two decide to get married and start a family. Both come from unhappy, broken families. Before the wedding, Bobby, who knows nothing about the pregnancy, looks for Dean at his place of work and beats him up.

Dean and Cindy live with their daughter Frankie in Pennsylvania about five years later . He works as a painter, she as a nurse in a clinic. Dean is satisfied with his simple life as a craftsman and father of a family, which allows him “to have a beer at eight o'clock in the morning and to spend a lot of time with his daughter”. Cindy sees more potential in him, which she doesn't use in her eyes. She is unhappy with the life they both lead. In order to give their crumbling relationship another chance, the couple spends a night in a hotel at Dean's spontaneous idea after an argument, but after both get drunk and attempt to talk again ends in an argument. Cindy leaves the hotel early in the morning after a call from the clinic, drives to work and leaves Dean asleep with just a note. He then shows up at the clinic, drunk and angry. When Cindy tries to send him home without listening to him, a heated argument ensues. The attending doctor, who had often made suggestive remarks to her in the past, is beaten by Dean. Thereupon Cindy is fired, she leaves the clinic with Dean and demands a divorce. Finally, Dean desperately asks Cindy to try again together, especially for Frankie, who is very attached to Dean. He reminds her of her marriage vows and wants to change for her the way she wants. Cindy can no longer stand the state of the relationship and asks for distance. Although Frankie urges her father to stay, Dean fulfills Cindy's wish and eventually leaves.

Reviews

The film and especially the two main actors received mostly very good reviews.

“If you love for the wrong reasons: The relationship drama Blue Valentine explores in harrowing scenes how a couple comes together not through feelings but rather through circumstances. Hollywood stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling are pushing the boundaries of what is bearable. "

- Hannah Pilarczyk : Spiegel Online

“[...] the view of the relationship between the two is completely free of clichés, unsentimental and yet unconditionally compassionate. This is how Cianfrance succeeds in making a very sincere, very adult film about a love that has been burdened with a heavy mortgage from the beginning, and the two weak people who shoulder it. This is a rarity in the cinema. Blue Valentine is a rare treasure. "

- Alexandra Seitz : Berliner Zeitung
