The Blue Marlin is a semi-submersible ship operated by the Dutch shipping company Dockwise Shipping . She is one of the largest ships of her kind.

history

The ship was built under hull number 726 by the China Shipbuilding Corporation in Kaohsiung (Taiwan) for the Norwegian Offshore Heavy Transport in Oslo . It was on on 8 April 1999 laid Kiel and ran on 23 December 1999 of staple . It was completed on April 25, 2000.

The ship was originally built to transport oil rigs weighing up to 30,000 tons .

On June 6, 2001 the Blue Marlin was bought by the Dutch Dockwise Shipping . At the turn of 2003/04, the ship at the Hyundai Mipo shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, was widened to 63 meters.

The 224 m long and 63 m wide Blue Marlin has a sister ship, the Black Marlin , which is only 42 meters wide.

functionality

The ship floods its water tanks and sinks with the low-lying loading area under water. The maximum draft when submerged is 28.40 m.

The object to be transported is then brought over the loading area by means of a tug and the tanks are then pumped empty, causing the ship and the cargo to rise again on the deck.

Known transports

The Blue Marlin became known worldwide for the transport of the US destroyer USS Cole , which was badly damaged in a bomb attack in the port of Aden . It transported the ship from October 29 to December 13, 2000 from the scene of the attack to Pascagoula , Mississippi , where it was repaired in its shipyard by Ingalls Shipbuilding .

In July 2005, the Blue Marlin transported an entire gas liquefaction plant for the Snøhvit gas field (Norway) from Cádiz in Spain to Hammerfest over 5000 km. The mission was completed in just eleven days.

In 2012 and 2013 respectively, the Blue Marlin transferred both newbuildings of the Australian Canberra- class helicopter docking ships from Vigo, Spain, to Melbourne .
