Erik Seidel (born November 6, 1959 in New York City , New York ) is a professional American poker player .
Seidel is one of the most popular and best poker players in the world. He is an eight-time bracelet winner of the World Series of Poker and has won the Main Event of the World Poker Tour , the Super High Roller of the European Poker Tour , the A $ 250,000 Challenge of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship and the National Heads-Up Poker Championship . With over $ 37.5 million in tournament prize money, he is the fourth most successful poker player in the world.
Seidel was at the top of the poker world rankings for a total of 15 weeks , most recently in February 2012. In October 2010 he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame . As part of the 50th edition of the World Series of Poker , Seidel was named as one of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .
Personal
Seidel played backgammon professionally for eight years and tried his luck on Wall Street before successfully entering the poker business. He lives in Las Vegas .
Poker career
Career
1988–1994: Wins his first three bracelets
Seidel has been participating in renowned live tournaments since 1998 . Early in his career he was a member of the Mayfair Club, a group of poker players that included Howard Lederer , Dan Harrington and Mickey Appleman .
Seidel made his first money placement in mid-May 1988 at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas . There he reached the final heads-up against Johnny Chan in the main event . Seidel lost the duel, which is part of the feature film Rounders , and received prize money of $ 280,000 for his second place . In August 1988 he won a tournament at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles and secured a prize of $ 144,000. At the 1991 WSOP , he finished runner- up in a Limit Hold'em variant , earning him $ 105,000. In January 1992, Seidel finished second in a tournament of the Queens Poker Classic at the Four Queens Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, which was endowed with 100,000 US dollars. At the 1992 WSOP , he won a Limit Hold'em event and received a bracelet and the grand prize of $ 168,000. The following year he won a Limit Omaha Hi-Lo tournament at the 1993 WSOP , for which he received $ 94,000 and his second bracelet . Seidel was also victorious in a tournament at the 1994 WSOP and won an event in Limit Hold'em , which was rewarded with his third bracelet and US $ 210,000.
At the end of 1994, his tournament winnings were just under $ 1.5 million.
1995–2001: Several WSOP final tables and two other bracelets
In March 1995, Seidel achieved its first cash placement outside of the United States at the Aviation Club de France in Paris . At the 1997 WSOP , he reached three Limit Hold'em final tables, winning more than $ 150,000 in prize money. In May 1998 he won a No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw tournament at the 1998 WSOP , for which Seidel received over $ 130,000 and his fourth bracelet. A year later, he reached the Main Event of the WSOP 1999 final table, he finished on the doped with about 280,000 US dollars in fourth place. At the 2001 WSOP , Seidel prevailed against 381 other players in the No Limit Hold'em variant and secured bracelet number five and, for the first time, more than 400,000 US dollars in prize money.
In total, by the end of 2001, he had won tournament prize money of almost 3 million US dollars.
2002–2006: Two bracelets and four tournament victories at the Hotel Bellagio
In January 2002, Seidel took second place behind Humberto Brenes at the World Poker Open in Tunica and received almost 260,000 US dollars. At the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Seidel won a mixed-variant event in July 2002 with a grand prize of over 45,000 US dollars. In mid-December 2002 he finished second in the main event of the United States Poker Championship in Atlantic City , which was paid for with 124,200 US dollars. At the Euro Finals of Poker in Paris in February 2003, Seidel also came second and received more than 60,000 euros . At the 2003 WSOP he won his sixth bracelet in Pot Limit Omaha and was about three weeks later, a third party at an event in No Limit Hold'em . He achieved a total of four money placements during the tournament series and earned prize money of almost 280,000 US dollars. In mid-September 2003, Seidel finished the main event of the United States Poker Championship in Atlantic City in second place for more than US $ 220,000. At the Bellagio Hotel he won a tournament of the Five Diamond World Poker Classic in mid-December 2003 with a prize of almost 100,000 US dollars and at the beginning of July 2004 an event of the Festa al Lago with a main prize of around 175,000 US dollars. In mid-October 2004, Seidel prevailed again at a Festa al Lago tournament , for which he received just under 220,000 US dollars. In December 2004 he reached the final table at the Main Event of the World Poker Tour (WPT) at the Hotel Bellagio and took fourth place, worth 165,000 US dollars. In the meantime the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino discharged WSOP in 2005 , he secured with a tournament victory in No Limit Hold'em his seventh bracelet and his hitherto highest prize money of 610,000 US dollars.
Seidel's prize money in tournaments at the end of 2006 was over 6 million US dollars.
2007–2010: Eighth bracelet and WPT title
In mid-January 2007 Seidel finished second in the A $ 100,000 Challenge of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship in Melbourne and received 550,000 Australian dollars . At the 2007 WSOP , he won his eighth bracelet and nearly $ 540,000 at the World No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw championship . In mid-January 2008, Seidel at the Main Event of the Aussie Millions runner-up, which was rewarded with a million Australian dollars. In April 2008 in Mashantucket he prevailed against 345 other players at the WPT Main Event and received the main prize of just under one million US dollars. In the 2008 WSOP Seidel sat twice on the final table, the year after he arrived at the 2009 WSOP three final tables. In mid-July 2009, he finished sixth at the WPT Main Event at the Hotel Bellagio, for which he received just under 165,000 US dollars. At the Aussie Millions in late January 2010, Seidel won a Pot Limit Omaha tournament with a prize of 120,000 Australian dollars. In March 2010, he reached the final of the National Heads-Up Poker Championship at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, where Annie Duke relegated him to second place, worth $ 250,000. At the 2010 WSOP , Seidel made three final tables and secured a total of around $ 160,000 in prize money during the tournament series.
At the end of 2010, the sum of his tournament prize money won was just under 10.5 million US dollars.
2011–2014: Won the A $ 250,000 Challenge and the National Heads-Up Poker Championship
In mid-January 2011, Seidel finished fourth in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventures (PCA) high roller in the Bahamas , for which he received nearly 300,000 US dollars. At the end of the same month, he finished third in the A $ 100,000 Challenge of the Aussie Millions, valued at 625,000 Australian dollars. 2015–2017: Triumph at the EPT Super High Roller and two final tables at the Super High Roller Bowl
2015 began Seidel with two final tables at the Aussie Millions : He finished sixth in the A $ 100,000 Challenge and fifth in the A $ 250,000 Challenge , which was rewarded with over a million Australian dollars. At the beginning of May 2015 he won the EPT Super High Roller in Monte-Carlo with a prize money of more than 2 million euros. In July 2015, at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, he reached the final table of the first Super High Roller Bowl and was awarded $ 860,000 for his seventh place. In mid-October 2015, Seidel sat at the final table at the main event of the World Series of Poker Europe played in Berlin and came in seventh with a payout of 100,000 euros. Since 2018: Highly endowed tournament results
In April 2018, Seidel sat at the final table at two super high roller events of the partypoker Millions in Barcelona and secured 540,000 euros. At the EPT in Monte-Carlo at the beginning of May 2018, he made it into the paid ranks three times and achieved prize money of over 250,000 euros. In May 2019, he took seventh place at the main event of the Triton Super High Roller Series in Budva, Montenegro , worth around 440,000 US dollars. At the 2019 WSOP , Seidel made the money seven times and won his highest cash prize of just under $ 265,000 for a sixth place in the Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller . In mid-November 2019, he made it to the final table at the Bahamas Super High Roller Bowl and finished fourth, earning him just under $ 1.3 million in prize money.
