Bob Shaw

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bob Shaw (actually Robert Shaw ; born December 31, 1931 in Belfast , † February 12, 1996 in Manchester ) was a Northern Irish writer who mainly wrote science fiction .

Life

Shaw was born and raised in Belfast. He attended a high school with a scientific-technical orientation and worked from 1947 to 1960 as a technical draftsman, temporarily in Canada , then in public relations. He published his first SF story Aspect in 1954 in Nebula magazine . From 1966 to 1969 he worked as a journalist for the Belfast Telegraph , later in advertising. He left Northern Ireland in 1973 with his family and lived in England, where he devoted himself entirely to writing from 1975.

One of his most notable concepts is what is known as slow glass, which is so dense that light takes years to get through; in this way one sees pictures that z. B. show the long dead. After the success of Light of Other Days (1966), Shaw developed the idea for the novel Other Days, Other Eyes (1972). The Orbitsville cycle is about the discovery of a Dyson sphere , while the twin worlds trilogy depicts two planets that are so close to each other that they have a common atmosphere - and you can cross over with balloons and wooden spaceships.

Bob Shaw died in 1996 at the age of 64 from complications of a colon cancer that had been cured in 1993.

Awards

Bob Shaw has received the British Science Fiction Association Award three times :

  • 1976 for his novel Orbitsville
  • 1987 for the novel The Ragged Astronauts ( The Hot Air Astronauts )
  • 1989 for the story Dark Night in Toyland

He won the Hugo Award for "Best Fan Writer" twice (1979 and 1980) . His short story Light of Other Days and the novel Orbitsville were also nominated for Hugo. He also received the Fan Activity Achievement Award in 1977, 1978 and 1979 .
