The aging fraudster and counterfeiter Red Diamond, who has just been released from prison , urgently needs money and persuades his former cellmate Ronnie to start a counterfeit business . In the coup in a hotel, Ronnie immediately shoots the business partner in cold blood with a shotgun and takes the money he brought with him. He escapes with the prey in a waiting vehicle driven by Red. The murdered man, however, was an undercover agent named Russo. His nearby partners, Mercer and Brady, were too late to help or identify the perpetrator. Operations leader Jimmy Mercer is now to be transferred to Newark due to this unauthorized action . However, his supervisor gives him a week to find the killer of his friend and partner.

Mercer, whose marriage failed due to his job, continues to seek contact with his wife and son. Even Red, who has been in prison for a long time, has relationship problems with his wife. The marriage conflicts between the two are shown side by side in alternating cuts.

Mafia boss Tony Dio gives Red a week (the same time limit Mercer received from his manager) to pay off his $ 50,000 debt. Red wants to land one last big coup, an exchange of $ 250,000 counterfeit money for $ 50,000 "real" money, arranged with the criminal lawyer Waxman. He leaves the dirty work of this action to Ronnie again. Only Ronnie appears personally at Max, because he knows Red and shortly before that he rudely rejected his request for a loan. The paths of the investigating police officers and the two criminals accidentally cross each other several times without either knowing about the other. Red and Jimmy Mercer even meet regularly with the same call girl named Vikki Dunbar, with whom Red primarily goes dancing at the Palace. When the deadline that Dio has given Red threatens to expire, Red plans to forestall him and murder him with Ronnie's help. In the meantime, the investigating officers Red and Ronnie have tracked down and are tailing them. However, the two succeed in the murder of Dio and his bodyguard and they escape. Red has also appropriated the money of those killed. However, shortly afterwards Red is arrested and forced to cooperate with the officers in order to arrest the murderer Ronnie.

All protagonists meet in the Palace. The gullible Ronnie is sent by Red with a trick into the deadly fire of the officers to enable his own escape. However, he was arrested shortly afterwards.

The credits show that Red has been sentenced to life imprisonment and is working on his appeal while Vikki has moved to Newark with Jimmy Mercer.
