content

29 year old manga writer Satoru Fujinuma ( 藤 沼 悟 ) has the ability to travel back in time. If a life-threatening situation for a person arises in his environment, he is suddenly some time earlier and has the opportunity to avert the danger. However, he cannot consciously use the ability. When his mother, Sachiko Fujinuma ( 藤 沼 佐 知 子 ), recognizes a serial killer and wants to turn on the police, she is murdered and found by her son. He is suspected and suddenly Satoru is 18 years back in the past - in the body of himself as a 10 year old. He remembers that a series of murders happened back then and suspects that he must find the perpetrator in order to save his mother.

Satoru also remembers that a classmate of his was one of the victims. Kayo Hinazuki ( 雛 月 加 代 ) is a quiet, withdrawn girl. He seeks contact with her in order to prevent the murder and to solve the case. But it is not always easy for Satoru to deal with her and his classmates and friends, as he is mentally still the 29-year-old adult. His friends Osamu, Kazu and Hiromi do not notice much, but the intelligent Kenya Kobayashi ( 小林 賢 也 ) finds his behavior strange. While Satoru finds out more about Kayo and seeks her around to protect her, he learns that she is being abused at home and that is why she is so quiet. Her class teacher Gaku Yashiro ( 八 代 学 ) has already noticed this, but together with the youth welfare office has not yet been able to help. Satoru also remembers Jun Shiratori ( 白鳥 潤 ), called Yūki. The 21-year-old part-time worker often plays with the children in his neighborhood and has been blamed for the series of murders. But Satoru believed in his innocence as a 10-year-old and also now.

To protect Kayo, he befriends her. He invites her to his birthday - which is also hers and at the same time the day of the murder. The plan worked until night, but the next day she disappeared again. Satoru's endeavors were unsuccessful and suddenly he is back in his future self. Here he now has to flee from the police who are looking for him because of the murder of his mother, and at the same time research what happened 18 years earlier. His colleague Airi Katagiri ( 片 桐 愛 梨 ) helps him, but is targeted by the perpetrator herself. He wants to kill her and attach her death to Satoru again. Thanks to an old friend of his mother's, who is also a journalist, he finds out that he has really changed the past. Kayo's death has been postponed for a day. But then he is discovered by the police during a secret meeting with Airi and arrested. He is transported back to the past, before Kayo's death.

Satoru now resolves to change as much as possible and thus prevent her death. He gives Jun Shiratori an alibi and doesn’t take Kayo home on the evening of his birthday, but instead takes him to an old bus. She will stay there for the next few days and is so safe. Soon Kenya and Hiromi also help to secretly feed and entertain them. Finally, the three of them go to Kayo's mother, together with Satoru's mother Sachiko, who has seen through the game, and confront her. The youth welfare office and class teacher Yashiro are also hidden here, so they can see everything and finally separate Kayo from their mother. After this success, however, Satoru does not find peace, because he does not yet know the murderer, who should then commit further acts. So he tries first to never leave Hiromi alone. He too was one of the victims. He also befriends another lonely girl who should become one of the victims. His friends help him, above all Kenya, who understands that Satorus Do better protects lonely children.

Then Satoru notices that another girl from the school who used to tease Kayo is now getting lonely after these new events. He fears she could become a new victim of the murderer, a replacement for those he escaped. So he feels after her too and wants to make friends. But when you visit a stadium, it suddenly disappears. While searching for her, he meets Yashiro, with whom he is chasing a suspicious vehicle. During the journey, however, Yashiro reveals himself to be the culprit who planned the murders. He noticed that it was Satoru who kept stopping him, so he lured him into the stolen car. He locks Satoru in it and lets it drive into a frozen lake, while Satoru calls out to him that he knows Yashiro's future.

Fifteen years later, Satoru wakes up from the coma he had been in since the incident. His mother looked after him the whole time and now he can recover relatively quickly. But his memories are missing and he is amazed to be able to do many things despite the coma that he could not have learned as a 10-year-old. His school friends, now grown up and at work, visit him - above all Kenya, Hiromi and Kayo. Yashiro, now a politician, also visits him regularly. Fearing that Satoru might regain his memory and get him into trouble, he plans to kill him. But when Yashiro stands on the roof of the hospital with Satoru, he confesses that he has the memory back. Yashiro wants to trick him again, blame him for the death of a girl in the hospital and make his death appear as a suicide, but Satoru has also taken precautions. He has secretly told his friends and his mother that they can convict Yashiro together and that he will be arrested for the attempted murder.
