Bonaventure Honegger

Bonaventure I. Honegger (born August 14, 1609 in Bremgarten , † April 11, 1657 in Muri ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1654 until his death he was abbot of the Muri monastery in the free offices (in today's canton of Aargau ).

He was the son of Ulrich Honegger, the mayor of Bremgarten and local bailiff of the Muri monastery, as well as Anna Dorer. Honegger made his profession in 1627 . In 1629/30 he studied philosophy at the University of Dillingen . He was ordained a priest in 1633 , after which he taught at the monastery school in Muri. In the years 1640 to 1642 he stayed again in Dillingen. From 1646 to 1649 Honegger was a pastor in Bünzen , a collature of the monastery, and from 1647 to 1655 he was secretary of the Swiss Benedictine Congregation . After becoming subprior in 1648, he was elected abbot in 1654. During the First Villmerger War in 1656, Honegger had the church treasures and the relics of catacomb saints kept in the monastery brought to Lucerne in a safe place to protect them from plunder.
