The former office building of the embassy , built in the mid-1970s, was in the Plittersdorf district on the east side of Godesberger Allee ( Bundesstrasse 9 ) with the address Godesberger Allee 40/42. In 2017 it was canceled.

history

Villa Rheinallee 27, seat of the embassy from 1960 to the mid-1970s

After establishing diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Germany (1954), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia opened an embassy at the Bonn government seat on March 15, 1957 , which initially had its seat in the Hotel Königshof . From February 1960, the envoy held the rank of ambassador. The office of the Saudi Arabian embassy was set up in Bad Godesberg, the main focus of the diplomatic missions, in the Villa Rheinallee 27 , built in 1884 (district Godesberg-Villenviertel ).

One day after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and Israel , the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its part interrupted its relations with the Federal Republic on May 13, 1965. As a result, the embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, acting as a protective power for Saudi Arabia, carried out business for the country at the previous location of the Saudi Arabian embassy with a “Department for the Representation of the interests of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Federal Republic of Germany” . On September 18, 1973, diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and the Federal Republic were resumed, so that a regular embassy was reopened at the seat of government in Bonn, which was still located at Villa Rheinallee 27.

Steinck House, 1987–1999 residence of the embassy

When the Saudi Arabian government began to prepare for a longer presence at the Bonn government seat, it was planning to build a new embassy office in Bad Godesberg in the mid-1970s. To this end, it acquired a 2,643 m² plot of land on Bundesstraße 9 and had a four-storey building with a usable area of 1,600 m² erected there by 1976 . A villa on Rüdigerstrasse in the Mehlem district served as the residence of the embassy, the residence of the ambassador . In 1982, Saudi Arabia acquired Haus Steineck , which was adjacent to this property , in order to use it as an additional residence. After completing the necessary renovation, the Saudi Arabian ambassador was able to move into the house in 1987. Since the mid-1980s at the latest, the embassy had had a military department in the Heiderhof district (Hohle Gasse 85), which was separate from the embassy chancellery and headed by a military attaché , and a culture and information office in the Plittersdorf district (Wurzerstraße) since the early 1990s at the latest 47) and at the latest since the end of the 1990s in the Lannesdorf district (Honnefer Straße 1) via a health office. From 1994 to 1995 the König-Fahd-Akademie was built in Lannesdorf as a cultural and educational institution of the kingdom , for which the Saudi Arabian embassy acted as the client .

In the course of the relocation of the seat of government to Berlin (1999), the headquarters of the Saudi Arabian embassy moved there at the beginning of October 1999. In Bonn, a branch office of the embassy was initially left at the previous location of the military department in Heiderhof, which continues to operate there via a military office (until 2007), a consular department (until 2008) and at its previous locations via a health office (until 2007) and a cultural department ( until 2008). The former office building and the Steineck house as a former residence have been vacant since the embassy moved and were sold to various buyers in August 2008. The former office building was acquired by a local businessman who intended to convert it into a hotel. After this plan failed due to the city's planning regulations, the building remained empty and was left to decay. It was canceled in early 2017. Saudi Arabia was the only institution in Bonn to have the König-Fahd-Akademie until June 2017, the former property of which is still owned by the state (as of spring 2018).
