The Steineck house is a villa in Mehlem , a district of the Bad Godesberg district of Bonn , which was built at the end of the 19th century. It is located above the banks of the Rhine (John-J.-McCloy-Ufer) on Rüdigerstraße (house number 82) at the corner of Fährstraße. The building stands with his facade as a monument under monument protection . From 1982 to 2008 the villa was owned by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia .

history

The villa was built at the end of the 19th century on the former site of the Mehlem court , which existed until the French era (1794–1815) , although the exact construction dates are unknown. When it first appeared in the preserved building files in 1898, it was in the possession of the Cologne banker Raoul Stein ( Bankhaus JH Stein ), who used it as a summer apartment with his family . A conversion was planned in which the villa was extended by one axis , a square room was added and the terrace was enlarged. Stylistically , the villa can be attributed to the picturesque French Renaissance . After the First World War , it initially housed a health resort , during the National Socialist era it was used as a rest home for a DAF organization called Arbeitsdank . In 1939 a residential building was added to the property.

Belgian occupation forces confiscated and used the villa towards the end of World War II . After the end of the occupation, the country was North Rhine-Westphalia new owner, leaving the villa under collection of a mezzanine to 1951 for the political ring youth for youth center ( youth center Steineck ) rebuild. In 1954 it was taken over by the Homecoming Association and was the venue for the Junge Union . The returnees association organized the Mehlemer discussion weeks here , in 1965 it gave its basic program here (“Mehlemer program”). From 1971 to 1973 an experimental school of East Carolina University ( European Study Center ) was operated in the property , after which it housed students from this university during their stay in Europe for a few years .

In 1982 the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia acquired Haus Steineck in order to set up the residence of its embassy , which was previously also located on Rüdigerstrasse in a younger villa, and the residence of the ambassador in the Federal Republic of Germany (→ list of diplomatic missions ). At that time the building was in an almost dilapidated condition, the facade had previously been placed under monument protection. The first construction work began in 1983, but in October of that year there was a construction freeze due to billing problems , which lasted until 1985. After completion of the renovation and renovation work at a cost of five million euros in late summer 1987, the Saudi Arabian ambassador was able to move into the villa.

In the course of relocating the seat of government , the Saudi Arabian embassy moved to Berlin in 1999 . The villa then stood empty and was left to decay. In 2008, Saudi Arabia sold the property with an area of 10,000 m² to a private investor who built five residential buildings with 23 high-end apartments on the property in 2012 and 2013. The residence building from 1939 and a swimming pool (architect: Dirk Denninger ) had previously been demolished.
