The BRAIN AG (actually BRAIN Biotechnology Research and Information Network AG ) is a medium-sized German company in the industrial ( "white") biotechnology with headquarters in Zwingenberg in the Bergstraße district in Hesse .

The company was founded in 1993 by Holger Zinke (* 1963), Jürgen Eck and Hans Günter Gassen in Darmstadt . Zinke was initially managing director , and since the conversion into a stock corporation (2000) he was CEO until July 2015 . On August 1, 2015, he switched to the Supervisory Board as Deputy Chairman . His successor as chairman of the board was Jürgen Eck (* 1962), who until then was the technical director . In February 2020 Adriaan Moelker took over the position of CEO from Jürgen Eck.

The company operates in the field of bioeconomy . It offers B2B products, develops its own product candidates and offers R&D collaborations for the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industries in the fields of natural substances , enzymes and microorganisms .

In particular, Brain specialized in the investigation of microorganisms or entire micro- biocenoses of various aerobic and anaerobic habitats (especially soil organisms ), their genetic makeup ( genome or metagenome ) and their metabolic pathways . The identified peptides and proteins are screened for their suitability as technical enzymes and biocatalysts and, if necessary, optimized by recombination .

The company's own BioArchive includes microorganisms, natural substances, fractions from edible plant material, metagenome and enzyme libraries, as well as complete metabolic pathways including previously non-cultivable organisms.

The company's clients include BASF , Bayer , Clariant , DSM , Evonik Industries , Henkel , Nutrinova , RWE , Sandoz , Südzucker and Symrise . For Henkel, for example, Brain AG developed a washing enzyme that develops the same washing power at temperatures of 40 ° C that was previously only achieved at 60 ° C.

Beginning around 2007, the company expanded its previous business model by entering the large-scale production of biocatalysts and cosmetic ingredients. In addition to BRAIN AG, the BRAIN group of companies currently includes six other companies (AnalytiCon Discovery, Biocatalysts Ltd., WeissBioTech, LA Schmitt, BRAIN LLC, SolasCure) with a total of around 300 employees. Around 120 people are employed at Brain AG in Zwingenberg.

Since February 2016, BRAIN has been listed as the first bioeconomy company on the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
