Bremen Institute for Canada and Québec Studies
The Bremen Institute for Canada and Québec Studies (BIKQS) is an institute at the University of Bremen . It was set up to promote studies on Canada, including the province of Québec . This takes place on an interdisciplinary basis, i.e. with the participation of teaching, research and students from the disciplines involved in the topic . These include Romance Studies , English and American Studies , but also General Studies . The aim is to develop a “transversal interdisciplinary certificate program” in Canada and Québec . At the same time, the institute members advocate an intensification of scientific exchange at the level of lecturers, researchers and research groups as well as students and doctoral candidates. This takes place in the form of high-profile presentations of research results, through the encounter with Canadian and Québec culture and the transfer of knowledge about Canada and Québec in the form of events and publications. In addition, partnerships were agreed with two Canadian universities in Montréal and Guelph near Toronto ; further goals are the establishment of a visiting professorship and a student exchange program.
Teaching
In the BA courses in English / American Studies and Romance Studies, modules with Anglo- and Franco-Canadian content are offered both in the compulsory and elective courses of the core areas as well as in the general studies that can be selected . After a fully developed BA and MA structure, it is possible to set up a transversal, interdisciplinary certificate course for Canada and Québec Studies , which is to result in a European-Canadian consortium (EACEA) in the medium term.
Since 2006 the Canadian Summer , a series of events with lectures on topics relevant to the institute, as well as regular conferences have taken place at the University of Bremen. In addition to members of the university, authors and lecturers from German, European and Canadian universities are among the speakers; Students have the opportunity to acquire credit points with their participation .
research
The intensification of research related to Canada and Québec as well as the promotion of the next generation of scientists are among the priority tasks of the BIKQS, whose interdisciplinary composition favors innovative projects with multi-perspective access. Bilateral projects include the establishment of joint research groups, which enables projects such as Regards croisés by Helga Bories-Sawala at the University of Montréal . It relates images of Canada and Québec in several European countries as well as the European perception of some of Canada's sub-societies in a contemporary historical perspective. The focus is on the representations in the media and literature. The project is supported by CERIUM, the Center for International Studies and Research at the University of Montréal.
In another research project, Norbert Schaffeld examines processes of identity constitution using the example of Shakespeare reception. He was the only European scholar to be appointed to the Advisory Board of the largest digital Shakespeare archive. It is based at the University of Guelph .
Cooperations
Particularly close relationships exist with the University of Guelph and the Université de Montréal .
During his research stay at the University of Guelph, Norbert Schaffeld was able to establish contacts with representatives of this university. The focus is on the School of English and Theater Studies and the School of Languages and Literatures . On the basis of a professional dialogue, a student exchange program is to be implemented from which - given the specific migration background of the province of Ontario - German studies, history, sociology and political science at the University of Bremen will also benefit.
A university partnership with Canada's largest francophone university, the Université de Montréal, was negotiated with the Direction des Affaires Internationales by Helga Bories-Sawala after her stay as a visiting professor in 2005/2006 . The Canadian University would be home to the Canadian Center for German and European Studies (CCEAE), the Center for International Studies and Research at the University of Montréal (CERIUM), the Inter-University Research Center for Literature and Culture of Québec (CRILCQ), the Institute for European Studies (IES / EUCE) and the departments of history, sociology, political science as well as the institutes for German studies and French-language literatures into the partnership.
Both partnerships are intended to intensify the exchange and to carry out jointly oriented research projects, conferences and publications. Primarily, however, it serves the exchange of students who receive preferential conditions at the partner universities, e.g. for tuition fees and accommodation. In May 2011, two corresponding contracts were signed, which Carmelita Görg, Commissioner for North American Relations at the University of Bremen and Helga Bories-Sawala, spokeswoman for the Institute for Canadian and Québec Studies, concluded with the Universities of Ottawa and Montréal on university-wide collaborations. This includes the exchange of students from the winter semester 2011/12, summer schools and the exchange of lecturers.
There are also contacts to the University of Toronto , York University and Glendon College , the Université de Moncton , the Université du Québec à Montréal and the Université Laval .
Public relations, conferences
Lectures, readings, school events and cultural events take place not only on the university campus , but in various locations in the state of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen . There are cooperations with the local institute français , the state center for political education in Bremen , the overseas museum and the German emigration center in Bremerhaven . Appropriate cooperation with theaters and cinemas is planned.
In cooperation with other cultural institutions and institutions, conferences are held, such as in November 2010 on the subject of The Far North - Le Grand Nord in the Bremen Überseemuseum.

The logo of the institute picks up on the Bremen town musicians , who consist of donkeys, dogs, cats and roosters, and replaces them with elk, bear, beaver and loon (loon).
