Brian Robertson, 1st Baron Robertson of Oakridge
Brian Hubert Robertson, 1st Baron Robertson of Oakridge , GCB , GBE , KCMG , KCVO , DSO , MC (born July 22, 1896 in London , † April 29, 1974 ) was a British military.
Life
Robertson was the son of British Field Marshal William Robertson, 1st Baronet . After first graduating from Charterhouse School , he went through military training at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich . He fought with the Royal Engineers in France and Italy during World War I. After serving first in the Indian subcontinent and later with the Directorate of Military Intelligence , he retired in 1934 with the rank of major .
In the following years Robertson, who had inherited the dignity of a baronet , of Welbourne in the County of Lincoln, from his father in 1933 , worked for the tire manufacturer Dunlop in South Africa.
He was reactivated in World War II and in 1941 Major General in the 8th Army . With this he was used in East and North Africa. During the fighting in Italy he was responsible for the entire military administration on the staff of Field Marshal Harold Alexander .
After the end of the war he was a member of the Allied Control Council in Germany from 1945 to 1949 , and from May 1946 he was also Deputy Military Governor of the British zone of occupation under Sholto Douglas . In the second function mentioned, he played a decisive role in the British deliberations on the territorial conception of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . From November 1947 to May 1949 he succeeded Douglas' military governor of the British zone. From June 1, 1949 until he was replaced by Ivone Kirkpatrick on June 26, 1950, he then served as High Commissioner in the Allied High Commission in the Federal Republic of Germany; his deputy was Christopher Steel . At the same time he was aide-de-camp of King George VI.
He then took over command positions in the British Army , including in the Middle East, and was governor of the Suez Canal Zone . From 1953 to 1961 he finally headed the British Transport Commission , in which the state public transport including ports and inland waterways were combined.
In 1961 Robertson was raised to hereditary peer as Baron Robertson of Oakridge , of Oakridge in the County of Gloucester .
