Bridges TV was a Muslim television station based in Buffalo and the first of its kind to broadcast in English . It was on the air from 2004 to 2012 .

The station was designed to counter prejudices and negative stereotypes about Muslims . For this he received media attention, for example in Variety magazine, NBC News, Voice of America and numerous national and regional newspapers.

Content

The station focused mainly on the everyday experiences of the estimated eight million Muslims in North America . By using the English language, it stood out from other stations that report in Urdu or Arabic , for example . Sitcoms based on the example of the Bill Cosby Show should also portray family life in a “normal” Muslim family in a positive way.

Other programs dealt with the situation in the Middle East . On the part of the Anti-Defamation League , the station was confronted with the accusation that it was making itself a “mouthpiece for Holocaust deniers and racists who wanted to bring their hatred and anti-Semitism into American households”.

Muhammad Ali , himself a subscriber and spokesman for the station, said: "Bridges TV gives American Muslims their own voice that Americans of all skin colors and religions should hear". A spokesman for the station said that such a station was long overdue. Market research has shown that there is a high level of interest among American Muslims and that many customers are willing to pay to receive the station.

management

Muzzammil Hassan, founder and managing director of the station, expressed that “moderate Muslims cannot identify with the extreme stereotypes that are often portrayed in Hollywood productions”. Moderate Muslims did not feel that the media portrayed them properly. "Every day we are confronted with stories of 'Muslim extremists, militants, terrorists and insurgents' on television," said Hassan in 2004 when the channel opened. "The stories that are missing are the countless stories of Muslim tolerance, progress, diversity, dedication and excellence that Bridges TV wants to tell". Bridges TV gives American Muslims a voice and depicts their everyday life. Hassan said he hoped Bridges TV could counterbalance the negative media coverage of Muslims after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . In 2007 Hassan received an award from the Council on American-Islamic Relations .

murder

In February 2009, Hassan was arrested and tried to stand trial for the murder of his wife. Hassan beheaded his wife after she said that she wanted to be separated from him. The wife's body was found on the station's premises.

After the murder became known, the broadcaster made the following statement on its website:

Bridges TV is deeply concerned and upset by the murder of Aasiya [Zubair] Hassan and the subsequent arrest of Muzzammil Hassan. We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of the victim. We hope that your privacy is respected.

After the murder, Bridges TV stopped reporting for three months. Other program content continued. In 2012 broadcasting was stopped.

Hassan was sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder in February 2011 .
