On January 3, 2015 at around 9:30 p.m. ( Greenwich Mean Time ), the Hoegh Osaka ran onto a sandbar in the Solent off the Isle of Wight . The ship was with a cargo of around 1400 cars, of which around 1200 Range Rover and Jaguar, on the way from Southampton via Bremerhaven to the Middle East. Commercial and heavy vehicles as well as construction machinery were also loaded. All 24 crew members and the pilot who was on board were rescued. Two crew members were injured in the incident. Several tugs tried to stabilize the ship. Rescue helicopters and a lifeboat were also on site. Temporarily fraud list about 50 degrees. According to the shipping company, the ship was due to stability problems after leaving Southampton deliberately run aground been to a capsizing prevent the fairway. The ship had already left the port of Southampton with a slight list.

On January 6, 2015, the ship floated up and was towed to a suitable position at the Spitbank for further investigation. After preparatory work on the roadstead “A”, the list of the ship was reduced to around five degrees by pumping water that had penetrated overboard and pumping over ballast, and the ship was towed to a berth in the Western Docks on January 22nd. There the ship was first unloaded and the list was reduced to 5 degrees. On February 10, the ship left the port of Southampton on its own and was repaired in Falmouth . On February 20, 2015, it was put back into operation.

Disaster investigation

The Hoegh Osaka on January 25, 2015 after being towed back into the port of Southampton

The official accident investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) showed that negligence in cargo planning resulted in considerable differences between the theoretically assumed and the actual weight of the cargo on the various decks. Thus, when the invited in large numbers on the upper decks passenger car / SUV -models Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover sweeping an estimated weight of 2.0 t per unit in preliminary stowage plan set, although the individual vehicles up to 2.5 t weighed which alone caused a discrepancy of 345.4 t. No final stability calculation based on the actual weights of the cargo and the distribution on the decks was carried out prior to departure.

Due to the distribution of the load on the decks, the ship ran out of Southampton with a center of gravity that was too high , which was not counteracted in time by ballasts . Because of the low stability of a 12 dissolved kn driven starboard change of course at the West Bramble - ton of the list to starboard, whereby - a heavy load (one on deck # 6 - next to other smaller charge displacements. JCB -Raupenbagger) from the lashing dissolved and made a hole in the outer skin from the inside through which water could enter. A broken part of a breaker punched a hole in the watertight deck No. 6, whereupon the seeping seawater was able to flood the lower decks of the ship. This strengthened the list so much that the propeller and rudder came out of the water and the ship left the fairway without steering or power and ran aground in the Bramble Bank area with a persistently strong list. A total of 2700 tons of sea water penetrated the ship.

Of the 1,450 cars loaded, 1,075 remained undamaged, 323 were slightly damaged and 52 were total write-offs . Of the 183 commercial and heavy vehicles and construction machinery loaded, 28 total losses and 33 less serious damage occurred.

Technical specifications

The ship is propelled by a low- speed eight-cylinder diesel engine from Mitsubishi of the type 8UEC60LS, which acts on a propeller via a gearbox .

The ship has twelve closed loading decks for vehicles, which are connected to one another with fixed and movable ramps. There are two loading ramps, one on the starboard side and one on the starboard half of the stern. The stern ramp has a load capacity of 100 tons. The ramps lead to main deck No. 6, from which the loaded vehicles are distributed to the other decks via the ramps between the decks. Nine of the decks are permanently installed, while decks 5, 7 and 9 are movable and, depending on the type of load (high vehicles), can be lowered or raised to make optimal use of the storage space. Decks No. 4, 6 and 8 are reinforced and have a greater headroom, so that they can be used for loading heavy vehicles.
