Brigadoon is a film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name from 1954. Directed by Vincente Minnelli , the lead role was played by Gene Kelly .

action

The two Americans Tommy and Jeff come across a small village called Brigadoon on a hunting tour in Scotland. The idyllic nest and its inhabitants only appear for one day every 100 years, then they disappear again. When the two friends arrive, a splendid wedding is being celebrated. Tommy falls in love with the beauty Fiona. His friend Jeff encourages him to come back home to hectic New York, Tommy is torn, because Fiona cannot leave the village, it would be destroyed. But Tommy could stay, love would make it possible.

Jeff uses a trick to persuade Tommy to leave Brigadoon and come back to New York with him. After a few months they meet again, but both have developed to their disadvantage: Jeff drinks, and Tommy can only think of Fiona with longing and has difficulties leading his life. The friends return to Scotland, but the village has disappeared.

Tommy laments his fate, but suddenly Brigadoon reappears in front of them, Tommy's love makes it possible. He moves into the village and disappears with him, Jeff stays behind.

The plot is based on the novella Germelshausen published by Friedrich Gerstäcker in 1860 , as stated in the end credits . The film was based on the Broadway musical Brigadoon , which premiered in 1947. The music is by Frederick Loewe , plot and text are by Alan Jay Lerner . The two have formed a team since 1942 and were later able to celebrate successes together, for example with their musical My Fair Lady .

For the filming, the musical star Howard Keel was actually intended to play the main role of Tommy Albright , but the choice fell on Gene Kelly, who is also responsible for the choreography of the film together with Cheryl Crawford . In small roles not mentioned in the opening credits, George Chakiris as a dancer and Stuart Whitman can be seen.

Awards

The film was nominated for three Academy Awards in 1955 , but won none. The nominations went to Irene Sharaff for Best Costume Design, Wesley C. Miller for Best Sound, and Cedric Gibbons , F. Keogh Gleason , Edwin B. Willis and E. Preston Ames for Best Production Design. At the Golden Globes 1955, the cameraman Joseph Ruttenberg received the award for the best camera in a color film.
