F. Keogh Gleason
Francis Keogh Gleason (born April 14, 1906 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , † December 18, 1982 in Los Angeles County , California ) was an American art director and production designer , who won the Oscar for best production design four times and more in the 1950s was nominated three times for an Oscar in this category. Gleason was best known for working with film director Vincente Minnelli .
Life
Gleason worked as art director and production designer in the Hollywood film industry for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Culver City , and between 1942 and 1970 he worked on the staging of nearly eighty films and television series .
He won his first Oscar for best production design at the Academy Awards in 1952 together with Cedric Gibbons , E. Preston Ames and Edwin B. Willis for the color film An American in Paris (1951), a musical film directed by Vincente Minnelli starring Gene Kelly , Leslie Caron and Oscar Levant . He received another Oscar in this category with Gibbons, Edward C. Carfagno and Willis in 1953 for the black and white film City of Illusions (1952), also directed by Minnelli, with Kirk Douglas , Lana Turner and Walter Pidgeon in the leading roles .
In 1954 he was nominated with Gibbons, E. Preston Ames , Carfagno, Gabriel Scognamillo , Willis, Arthur Krams and Jack D. Moore for this Oscar for the color film The Story of Three Loves (1953), that of Minnelli and Gottfried Reinhardt with Kirk Douglas , James Mason and Leslie Caron. At the Academy Awards in 1955 he was nominated for an Oscar again with Gibbons, Ames and Willis for a color film directed by Minnelli, namely for the set design in the musical film Brigadoon (1954) with Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse .
At the Academy Awards in 1957 he won both an Oscar for best production design in a black and white film and was also nominated for the Oscar for best production design in a color film: He received the Oscar for Gibbons, Malcolm Brown and Willis for Hell is in me ( Somebody Up There Likes Me , 1956), the life story of middleweight boxer Rocky Graziano filmed by Robert Wise with Paul Newman , Pier Angeli and Everett Sloane in the lead roles, while it was for him, Gibbons, Hans O. Peters , Ames and Willis in the Oscar nomination stayed for Vincent van Gogh - A Life in Passion (1956), a depiction of the life of Vincent van Gogh by Minnelli with Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn and James Donald .
Gleason won his fourth and final Oscar with William A. Horning , Ames and Henry Grace for Gigi (1958), a musical film also directed by Minnelli with Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jourdan .
Since the late 1950s he has worked as an art director and production designer for numerous television series such as Twilight Zone (1960 to 1962), Der Unkel vom Mars (1966) and solo for ONCEL (1966 to 1967).
