from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brigitte Handschick , née Grabowski (born July 14, 1939 in Berlin ; † September 26, 1994 there ), was a German painter and graphic artist . Together with Christa and Lothar Böhme , Manfred Böttcher , Dieter Goltzsche , Wolfgang Leber , Harald Metzkes , Klaus Roenspieß and Hans Vent , she has been part of the Berlin school since the 1960s.

Life

After attending school in Berlin-Mitte from 1945 to 1956, Handschick worked as an extra at the Komische Oper Berlin . From 1957 to 1961 she studied at the master school for arts and crafts in Berlin-Charlottenburg , specializing in exhibition design with Heinz Weißbrich and Günter Scherbarth . Her fellow students were Christa Krefft (later Böhme), Lothar Böhme and Wolfgang Leber. After the Berlin Wall was built in August 1961, she had to break off her studies in West Berlin . Since 1961 she has been working as a freelance painter, graphic artist and book illustrator in East Berlin . In 1966 she married the graphic artist and book illustrator Heinz Handschick (born on September 21, 1931). Both lived and worked in Berlin-Altglienicke ever since . In 1971 Handschick became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK). From 1987 to 1990 she had a teaching position at the technical college for advertising and design in Berlin-Schöneweide. Brigitte Handschick died in 1994 at the age of 55 after a long illness. Parts of the written estate are in the Saxon State Library and in the Dresden State and University Library .

Brigitte Handschick counted with Christa and Lothar Böhme, Manfred Böttcher, Dieter Goltzsche, Wolfgang Leber, Harald Metzges, Klaus Roenspieß and Hans Vent to the Berlin school of the post-war years. In her paintings and watercolors, Handschick mainly devoted herself to the landscapes on the periphery of the city. In her work, Handschick made connections between space, time and transience visible in a reduced color scheme, in which shades of black predominate, and a well-structured brushwork. The experience of nature was the starting point of her painting. In addition to cityscapes, still lifes and interiors were created. Watercolors and paintings have titles such as “Early Spring”, “Way to the Tram”, “Cobbler Garden” or “Terrace”. “Handschick's art draws its tension from silence, it is always restrained in expression” (Heidemarie Otto on the personal exhibition Handschicks in the State Museum Schwerin 1990).

"The lyrically subjectivized, integrity motif, the restriction of the area of experience and representation to the near, personal, made it possible to distinguish it from any program painting, that of socialist realism and also a modified or alternative program."
