The Brukenthal painting collection is located in the Brukenthal Palais in Sibiu / Hermannstadt in Transylvania , Romania. It is part of the Brukenthal Museum , which goes back to Samuel von Brukenthal , who bequeathed his entire estate (picture collection, art objects, real estate, latifundia) to the Saxon nation . The Pinakothek (painting collection) together with the Kupferstichkabinett, the Brukenthal library and the extensive coin and mineral collection make up the Brukenthal collection .

history

During his stays in Vienna at Maria Theresa's court , mainly in the period 1759–1774, the later “governor of Transylvania”, Samuel von Brukenthal (actually: Bruckenthal), began to collect paintings, including contemporary art. The first notes on acquisitions in the still new Pinakothek date from 1770. His collection already had an excellent reputation in Vienna. In Palais Brukenthal, which he had built in Sibiu, the gallery was probably set up in the years 1787–1789, after Brukenthal, who had been in office here since 1774, was recalled from the office of governor by Joseph II .

When Brukenthal died in 1803, he bequeathed the collection of the University of Nations . After the dissolution of this self-governing body of the Transylvanian Saxons as a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise , responsibility for the collection was transferred to the Evangelical Church AB in 1867 , which managed the Pinakothek until the end of the Second World War . Afterwards the collection including the palace was confiscated by the new state under the leadership of the Romanian Communist Party . The most valuable paintings, including works by van Eyck and Cranach, were brought to Bucharest. They stayed there until 2006. After a long legal dispute, the Evangelical Church AB in Romania received both the pictures and the Brukenthal Palace with the rest of the Brukenthal collection back.
