Bruno Hespeler (* 1943 in Baden ) is a German professional hunter , freelance journalist and internationally known non-fiction author on hunting topics.

Life

Bruno Hespeler was for many years a professional hunter in the Bavarian State Forestry Administration and Forestry district manager in the private forest, before he retired from the civil service. Since the 1980s he has worked as an author of specialist books on hunting, a freelance journalist as well as a consultant and expert. Originally from Baden, Hespeler first lived in the Allgäu before he later settled in Carinthia .

Works

He became known to a wide audience through his numerous publications in the specialist, daily and general press in eight European countries as well as through his non-fiction books, which he has written since the early 1980s. Hespeler attaches great importance to imparting hunting knowledge in a practical way. He has therefore dealt intensively with all aspects of Hege . Well-known books by him that deal with general questions of hunting practice are, among others, the handbook of hunting grounds. Creating and maintaining habitats (1992), wildlife damage today. Prevention, detection, defense (1999), Hege and Jagd in the course of the year (2000) and hunting successfully. Game behavior, weather, hunting operations, equipment (2008).

One of Hespeler's most important tasks as a professional hunter is to look for game that has been shot at. Useful hunting dogs are essential. Hespeler was never restricted to a single breed, he led bloodhounds , bracken , quail dogs and hunting terriers . His knowledge and experience from four decades flowed into his book Before and After the Shot. Caliber, agreement, firing marks, hunting for hoofed game (2002).

In addition, he has implemented the findings of modern game biology in several books on individual game species for hunting practice. Roe deer are particularly successful today. Lebensraum, Jagd und Hege , which appeared for the first time in 1988 and has since been reprinted several times. Related books he published on the wild (2004), wild rabbits and wild pigeons (1998), Wild Water (2003) and the predators (1995 and 2004). He published most of his books in the BLV Verlag . Some have also been translated into Czech and Hungarian .

Against this background, up-to-date training for the hunters is important to him. In preparation for the hunter examination , he therefore wrote the book Hunting Knowledge at a Glance. Facts and figures for practice and examination (2000) and since the 56th edition (2007) has been the overall editor of the classic textbook Before and after the hunter examination founded by Herbert Krebs .

Hespeler took the excitement about the brown bear "Bruno" as an opportunity to visit Bruno 's homecoming. Bear, wolf and lynx are coming back. Fears, Risks and Hopes (2006) deal with the return of the three large predators, the brown bear , the wolf and the European lynx .

Due to his specialist knowledge and his rhetorical talent, he is a sought-after speaker for lectures, seminars and excursions in Germany, Austria , Italy , Liechtenstein , Luxembourg , Switzerland and the Netherlands .

Controversy about hunting customs

In numerous articles and in his books Jäger woin? A critical look at the German Waidwerk (1990) and hunting sustainably. Contemporary game management (2003), Hespeler dealt with hunting customs and the general situation of hunting in an increasingly critical social environment. He particularly criticizes the hunting customs unified by Walter Frevert and Ulrich Scherping in the 1930s, which he rates as artificial and imposed.

Andreas Gautschi , however, comes in his biography Frevert different conclusions by pointing out the shattered by the German petty customs and partially vital for communication Jagdsignale had by the emerging since the 1920s, mobility of a Standardization been necessary.

Gautschi shows that Frevert made use of existing (local) customs wherever possible. In the hunting signals criticized by Hespeler, in contrast to Hespeler's presentation that Frevert had often only composed uniform hunting signals on the orders of Hermann Göring to bring the hunters into line , he actually only continued long-standing attempts to write down the hunting signals in correspondence with his predecessors.

Quote

“We [hunters] are not masters of creation and we don't have the big say. We are - like the rest of the population - users of nature, and as long as this use makes sense for nature itself, it cannot be denied by serious spirits. "
