Life

Herbert Krebs was born on June 19, 1901 in the Forsthaus Todtenrode near Altenbrak in the Harz Mountains . The building is now a forest inn. After completing his training, he first worked as a district forester , but later left the forest service . In addition to his work as editor of the specialist magazine Der Deutsche Jäger , he was mainly responsible for training candidates for the hunter examination. He had started this early: in 1940 he published the textbook Before the Jägerprüfung for the first time . The narrow and is just over 180 pages long ribbon, had participated in the Special Sections Eberhard Rhomberg and Jacob Krembs was a response to the five years before the Empire Hunting Act range-introduced Jägerprüfung with their requirements. To justify his work, Krebs wrote in the foreword:

“The time when the hunter was able to draw unconcerned from the full is gone forever in our fatherland. May one or the other mourn her. That's why she won't come back. Anyone who wants to engage in future German hunting realms to the sleeve, has been the Hegen have learned. "

According to the spirit of the Reichsjagdgesetz (Reichsjagdgesetz), which was largely conceived by Ulrich Scherping , this also meant the concept of "Hege with the rifle", as Ferdinand von Raesfeld had propagated. However, it was only after the Second World War that Krebs' textbook really came into its own: the number of hunters in the 1950s and 1960s doubled the pre-war level - and with it the need for training documents. With the 17th edition in 1960, the title changed to the familiar name before and after the hunter test (2009) . With this, Krebs wanted to emphasize that successfully passing the test did not mean the end of learning. In this sense, he also constantly adapted his textbook to new scientific findings and changed social attitudes. This tradition was kept in the later editions after his death in order to keep the work up to date with the constantly increasing requirements and thus with the state of the art. So who has cancer today is a completely different face than at the beginning - and a much larger scale: Did the first edition in 1940 to nearly 180 pages 636 exam questions and answers, the 57th edition came in 2009 to 1,019 pages with more than 5000 Exam questions. Next to Richard Blase 's Die Jägerprüfung. The teaching, learning and reference work for training and practice and Fritz Nüßlein's The Practical Handbook for Hunting , Cancer is still the best-known and most popular textbook for preparing for the hunter's examination.

With young or old? (1962) and shoot or spare? (1969) presented two further textbooks that were intended to help hunters to safely address roe deer and red deer , for example, and thus avoid false shots when hunting . In 1979 he summarized both books together with Walter Helemann in the new edition Young or old? Address hoofed game properly together. During the Second World War and the post-war years, Krebs also published four books with animal and hunting tales, which were also aimed at a younger reading public, including The Great Bee and Furche and Track (both 1948).

Herbert Krebs, who last lived in Rechtmehring-Holzkram in Upper Bavaria , died there on November 13, 1980 at the age of 79.
