history

The place was first mentioned in 1246 in the will of Mesko II of Opole-Ratibor as "Breze". In this will, Mesko transferred the place to the Dominican monastery in Ratibor. It was mentioned as Brese, Bresca and villa Brzeszcze.

The place was mentioned in 1783 in the book Beytrage describing Silesia as Brzezek (possibly incorrectly instead of Brzezetz), belonged to a princess of Hohenlohe and was in the Tost district and had 121 inhabitants, a farm, 20 gardeners and cottagers. In 1865 "Brzezetz" consisted of a village community and a dominium. At that time the village had 20 gardener jobs and 17 cottager jobs. There was also a water mill with two grinders and a saw. In 1871 the place came to the district of Cosel.

In the referendum in Upper Silesia on March 20, 1921, 302 eligible voters voted for Upper Silesia to remain with Germany and 252 for membership in Poland. At Gut Brzezetz, 29 voted for Germany and ten for Poland. After the division of Upper Silesia, Brzezetz remained with the German Empire . Around 1932 the place was renamed Birken . Until 1945 the place was in the district of Cosel .

In 1945 the until then German place came under Polish administration and was then attached to the Silesian Voivodeship and renamed the Polish Brzeźce . The district of Cosel was renamed Powiat Kozielski. In 1950 the place came to the Opole Voivodeship . Since 1973 the place belongs to the municipality of Birawa. In 1975 the powiat Kozielski was dissolved. In 1999 the place came to the newly founded Powiat Kędzierzyńsko-Kozielski . On April 23, 2007, German was introduced as the second official language in the Birawa community. On January 10, 2011, the place was also given the official German place name Brzezetz .
