history

Konrad II von Oels und Cosel acquired a piece of land between Birawa and Dziergowitz (Oderwalde) in order to settle settlers there under German law. The place was first mentioned in a document from Cosel from January 23, 1380. In this document Nikolaus von Libischau received the place with the property as a gift. The village was u. a. owned by the von Hohenlohe family. They acquired it in 1775 and kept it until it was confiscated by the Polish state in 1945.

The place was mentioned in 1783 in the book Beytrage describing Silesia as Libischau and was in the Tost district and had 170 inhabitants, ten farms, 16 gardeners and ten cottagers. In 1865 “Liebischau” consisted of a village community and a dominium. At that time the village had six farms, 20 gardener jobs and 31 cottager jobs. There was also a water mill. The school opened in 1886.

In the referendum in Upper Silesia on March 20, 1921, 172 eligible voters voted for Upper Silesia to remain with Germany and 143 for membership in Poland. Libischau remained with the German Empire after the division of Upper Silesia . On July 2, 1936, the place was renamed Liebenbach in the course of a wave of renaming during the Nazi era . Until 1945 the place was in the district of Cosel .

In 1945 the until then German place came under Polish administration and was then attached to the Silesian Voivodeship and renamed Lubieszów . The district of Cosel was renamed Powiat Kozielski. In 1950 the place came to the Opole Voivodeship . In 1975 the powiat Kozielski was dissolved. In 1999 the place came to the newly founded Powiat Kędzierzyńsko-Kozielski . On April 23, 2007, German was introduced as the second official language in the Birawa community. On January 10, 2011, the place was also given the official German place name Libischau .
