Burchard Alexander von Merveldt , baptismal name Burchard Alexander Anton Maria Ludger (born March 23, 1714 in Münster ; † February 11 or February 12, 1775 there ), was canon in Münster and treasurer of the Electorate of Cologne .

Life

Origin and family

Burchard Alexander von Merveldt grew up as the son of Ferdinand Dietrich von Merveldt and his wife Josefa Maria Anna von Westerholt zu Lembeck (1693–1762) with his siblings Clemens August , Franz Arnold , Maximilian Ferdinand , Hermann Adolf (* 1718, Order of Malta) and Sophie Ludovica Agnes (1730–1810, ⚭ February 10, 1748 Wilhelm Ferdinand von Galen ) in the ancient Westphalian noble family von Merveldt . The gentlemen von Merveldt belonged to the primeval nobility and to the oldest families in the Münsterland.

Career and work

With the receipt of the tonsure on December 25, 1728, Burchard Alexander was prepared for a spiritual life. In October 1731 he enrolled at the University of Orléans and a year later became the treasurer. Four years later - in 1735 - he was appointed treasurer of the Electorate of Cologne and sworn to knighthood in Münster in April of that year . He thus became a representative in the state parliament , a body made up of the three estates. His task was to regulate the tax system and from 1774 also the feuding system in the bishopric of Münster. His brother Franz Arnold renounced his prebend in Münster in 1746 and left her to him. Active as a canon in St. Mauritz, he was ordained a subdeacon and then a priest. He owned the obedience in Senden and in 1772 received the archdeaconate Warendorf. Burchard Alexander is buried in Münster Cathedral.
