The castle Müddersheim stands on the outskirts of Müddersheim , a district of Vettweiß right on Neffelbach in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

At the beginning of the traditional history of the castle is the Polish Queen Richeza , a granddaughter of the German Emperor Otto II . The Archbishop of Cologne Anno testified in a document in 1057, among other things, that he left the usufruct of Müddersheim Castle to Richeza, who had to leave the Kingdom of Poland after the death of her husband King Mieszko II in 1034 because of the threat from anti-German and anti-Christian circles . After Richezza's death Anno gave Burg Müddersheim to the St. Kunibert monastery in Cologne .

In the course of history, the rule of Müddersheim never belonged to the neighboring Duchy of Jülich , but was a sub-rule of the Electorate of Cologne . The first known feudal bearers of Müddersheim Castle were the Knights of Müddersheim of the same name . In 1130 the first members of this family are mentioned in a document. In the middle of the 14th century, the lords of Schleiden are mentioned as fiefdoms of Müddersheim. In 1351 Johann von Schleiden sold the castle with five Hufen arable land, six acres of vineyards, twelve acres of Benden , 70 acres of forest, the mill and all rights connected with the castle to Goedert von Aldenrode .

In 1426, the castle and the rulership passed to the von Kinzweiler family through marriage . In the 15th and 16th centuries, other families were temporarily involved in the property. Wilhelm von Kinzweiler let his grandson Adolf von Hocherbach enfeoff Müddersheim in 1653. When he died childless, the inheritance fell in 1670 to his sister Anna Katharina, who was married to Johann Heinrich von Hanxler.

Müddersheim was pledged to Rudolf Adolf von Geyr in Cologne as early as 1701. 1707 bought this castle and lordship. Müddersheim Castle is still owned by the Barons von Geyr zu Schweppenburg today .

Castle complex

Rudolf Adolf von Geyr built the current moated castle between 1718 and 1720 , which was surrounded by extensive gardens and parks. The brick complex consists of the two-storey, rectangular mansion with a hipped roof and the three-winged outer bailey with the representative gate on the southeast side. The mansion was built on an almost square floor plan. Its courtyard side is characterized by a single-axis gable-crowned central projection and an outside staircase .

The original park from the 18th century was largely redesigned in the 19th century.
