Nebra Castle

The castle Nebra is the ruins of a hilltop castle on 148  m above sea level. NN in Nebra (Unstrut) in the Burgenland district of Saxony-Anhalt .

Altenburg

Already in the Upper Palaeolithic , an area on the northern edge of today's city was used as a storage area. During excavations in 1962, among many other things, the figurines of Nebra were found .

In the 9th century, a fortified hilltop settlement, the Altenburg , was built on a mountain spur protruding to the north at a junction of the Kupferstrasse . The complex with the outer and main castle was surrounded by a moat and a wall. It was abandoned in the 13th century, but is considered an important starting point for the development of the town of Nebra.

There has been an outdoor swimming pool on the site since 1969.

new Castle

The new castle was first mentioned in 1207. It was built on a sandstone rock to the south. Today only a residential tower and remains of the chapel built after 1250 as a ruin, as well as the barrel vaults of the wine cellar are preserved.

Until 1247 the castle was a seat of the Landgraves of Thuringia . Then it came into the possession of the Counts of Querfurt . The castle and the city were besieged and destroyed several times, for example in 1341 by Frederick the Serious . Also in the Saxon fratricidal war from 1446 to 1451 there was new destruction due to the siege of troops of Elector Friedrich II. (Frederick the Meek).

A few years later Friedrich von Nißmitz received the castle and town from Wilhelm the Brave as a fief . Under Quirin and Georg von Nißmitz , parts of the complex were demolished and converted into a mansion in the Renaissance style, which thus corresponded to a castle (Old Castle Nebra). The castle and the place remained in the possession of the Nißmitz family until 1718 .

During the Thirty Years War the castle was occupied by Swedish troops from 1636 to 1648 , some of which were destroyed again and then fell into disrepair.

In 1874, near the ruins of the old castle, the New Nebra Castle was built in neo-Renaissance style.
