Templštejn Castle

The ruins of the castle Templštejn , Czech hrad Tempelštejn , (also Tempelštein, Tempelstýn , German Tempelstein ) is the ruin of a spur castle one and a half kilometers west of Dolní Heřmanice in Okres Žďár nad Sázavou , Czech Republic .

Geographical location

Templštejn lies on the left side above the Oslava valley on a wooded mountain spur in the Krischanauer Uplands ( Křižanovská vrchovina ) in the south of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands . To the northwest below is the Eliášova Myslivna (Elias Forest House).

The surrounding villages are Petráveč in the north, Dolní Heřmanice in the east, Oslava in the southeast, Studnice in the south, Rohy in the west and Osové and Nesměř in the northwest.

history

There is no written record about the castle. It was probably built as a late medieval guard castle at the transition from the 13th to the 14th century. The name Tempelstein comes from folk tradition, whether it was built by the Templar order cannot be proven.

Tempelstein Castle has been considered desolate since the first half of the 16th century. Nothing is known about their demise. In the absence of any news of its capture or destruction, it is believed that the castle burned down and was not rebuilt.

A one and a half meter thick and five meter high stump of the keep over a length of four meters and remains of the moat have been preserved .

A castle ruin of the same name Templštejn from the same era is located not far to the east on the Jihlava . The two systems are often confused with each other, with the larger and clearly visible ruin above the Jihlava being a popular excursion destination.
