Burgberg Tower

The Burgbergturm is a 30 meter high observation tower belonging to the Swabian Alb Association and is located on the Burgberg ( 534  m ) on the Frankenhardt mark north of the Oberspeltach district . There is also a restaurant as well as a rest area and playground on the castle hill.

The original tower was built in 1885 by the Crailsheim Beautification Association under the then board of directors, Revierforster Paradeis. The construction costs of the tower, originally planned only as a makeshift solution, amounted to 1000 M.

history

  • 1748: Construction of a forester's house
  • September 28, 1885: Opening of the tower, which was added to the existing forester's house. The tower was only intended as a makeshift.
  • 1904: Merger of the Beautification Association and the Crailsheim Albverein branch to form the Burgberg Comité. In the following years planning for a 40 m high tower. However, the construction costs of 20,300 marks could not be raised.
  • Pentecost 1932: Opening of a hiking home in the forester's house on the Burgberg This was partially documented by the Crailsheim Air Base during World War II.
  • April 1945: The building is hit by fire bombs and burns down completely.
  • 1955: Erection of a 16-meter-high, wooden survey signal that served as a provisional lookout point.
  • 1960/61: Construction of today's tower with 146 steps. The following were involved in the construction: Director Georg Fahrbach , Gauobmann Wilhelm Andrassy, ​​architect Brüninghaus (Crailsheim), Karl Berger from Altenmünster, wood construction company Speer & Gscheidel (Crailsheim).
  • April 11, 1960: Topping-out ceremony at the new tower.

  • 1975: Enlargement of the restaurant and construction of an underground room. Inauguration August 29, 1976.
  • 2001: Renovation of the tower on the occasion of the Albverein Festival in Crailsheim. The wall in the entrance area was designed by the artists Gerhard Frank, Rainer Herold and Ernst-Hans Stutz with the Albverein emblem made of shell limestone, sandstone and steel. The colored background represents paths, the horizon is formed by the three Kaiserberge Hohenstaufen , Stuifen and Rechberg .

The Burgberg Tower is a 30-meter-high wooden tower standing on a square floor plan, which is clad with diamond-shaped red facade panels above the stone base to below the viewing level . On the ground floor it is extended on three sides by a restaurant and a lower room. Inside the tower, a wooden staircase, which is laid out as a spiral staircase in the upper area , leads over 146 steps to the closed viewing platform . The four window openings on the platform, pointing to the cardinal points, can be closed with vertically sliding wooden shutters, on which hand-painted orientation boards are attached. From here you have a very good all-round view.
