The Lichtenstein castle ruins are mistakenly referred to in books and maps as an abandoned castle . The rampart and moat of the Höhenburg on the Butzenberg near the municipality of Neidlingen are fortifications from the Middle Bronze Age (around 1200 BC) with dry stone walls from the modern era.
Finds that would speak for a permanent settlement of the Butzenberg in the Middle Ages (stove tiles, roof tiles, mortar) were not found. The dry built walls and terraces there were laid out by the Lichtenstein association around the Kirchheim pharmacist Albert Hölzle from 1913.
A Lichtenstein castle is mentioned for the first time by Riecker in 1833 (Pfandcommisär Riecker: Contributions to the history of the city of Kirchheim (1833) p. 73f.) And can be traced back to a misinterpretation of field names in connection with a knight of Lichtenberg.
