Grötzingen ruins

The Grötzingen ruin is an abandoned Niederungsburg near the Grötzingen district of the city of Aichtal in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

A first mention of the sex of the noble free von Grötzingen can be found in the sources for the 12th century. Diepold von Bernhausen acquired possession after 1270. Archaeological evidence of a castle for the period around 1272 resulted from the dendrochronological dating of a wooden beam found in 1995. The beam shows that the castle had a bridge that led to the city. The first building was abandoned around 1300 and rebuilt as a stone residential tower with a half-timbered tower after the castle hill had been filled in. In 1335 Diepold von Bernhausen sold half of the castle to Count Rudolf von Hohenberg . As early as 1337 the castle was given to Count Ulrich III by the Counts of Hohenberg . resold by Württemberg . After the 14th century there is no evidence of a castle in the sources. The castle site was finally destroyed in 1952, with the remains of the residential tower being documented. The castle hill had a diameter of 40 meters and the residential tower had a base area of 8 by 8 meters and a wall thickness of 1.5 meters.
